Run the Windows version of Quake3 in OS X Apps
I own a copy of the Windows version of Quake3, but since I no longer run Windows on any of my hardware, the game has been sitting around collecting dust.

To play the Windows version of Quake3 in OS X, download and install the 1.32 OS X update from id Software's Quake3 Gold page (click on the "updates" link at the bottom of the page). The installer will create a Quake3 folder in your Applications folder. Copy the "pak0.pk3" file from the /Quake3/baseq3/ folder on the Quake3 CD to the "baseq3" folder in the newly created Quake3 folder. Run Quake3 and enter your CD key and you're all set.

[robg adds: Since id distributes a hybrid PC/Mac CD-ROM, I don't believe they'll have an issue with a single user purchasing one license, but if I'm wrong, I'm sure I'll hear about it.]

Run the Windows version of Quake3 in OS X
Authored by: prk on Jul 28, '03 11:05:53AM

What I want to know is how to run my Windows version of Wolf3d. Even though I've never used Windows, I still get Windows software for my birthday. Go figure.

Precedure for RTCW

1. Get the updater: http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/12479

2. Create a folder ("Wolfenstein", "RTCW" or whatever)

3. Inside that folder create a folder "Main".

4. Put all .pk3 files from the Main folder of your windows version inside the Main folder on your Mac.

5. Run the updater and point it to your "Wolfenstein" folder.

6. Play.

bye. Andreas.

Run the Windows version of Unreal Tournament in OS X
Authored by: reisschuessel on Jul 28, '03 03:09:32PM

I wonder if there is a similar way to use the Windows version of Unreal Tournament (1) in Mac OS 9 or X.
I'm aware that it is somewhat diffrent than ID games but maybe...
I ask this because it is impossible for me to get a Mac version of the game (in germany) but the demo plays very well on my iBook :-)
Thanks! Niels

Run the Windows version of Unreal Tournament in OS X

The reason why this hint works is because the 'Updater' contains all of the necessary files to play Q3, with the exception of the .pk3 files.

You might be able to install the PC version of UT on a Mac, but this would likely require installing the game on a PC first, copying the UT directory to your mac, and then copying the OSX update to UT to the UT directory. The directory structures for each game is different too (some of the files in the System directory on the PC need to go in the root of the UT directory on the mac).

It works!

I figured it out by myself. It's so simple that i didn't even think about this solution.
Install the PC version on your pc and then patch it up to version 436 using the win-update. Then copy the whole thing over to your mac and put the "Unreal Tournament X" files (search versiontracker for it) in your UT folder.
And then... it works!

Most games based on the Quake III engine (Quake III, RtCW, etc...) all use this little secret. I tried getting Medal of Honor to do this, but it doesn't work, as a lot of the files in the Mac version are way different.
