Mounting iPods after waking from sleep System
After several weeks with my new iPod I've discovered some inconsistencies with it mounting. Perhaps these issues are replicated in other external FireWire drives. These inconsistencies seem to remain even though I have updated the machine's os (10.2.6) and the iPod's os (2.0.1).

The issue occurs quite often when I have my iPod connected to my laptop and I put the laptop to sleep. Even though the iPod is still connected when the machine awakens, it refuses to mount. The iPod continues to flash the "Do not remove" message and there is no way to unmount it. I'm fearful of removing it from the laptop, given the flashing warning not to.

A simple work around that I've found is to quit iTunes (if it's not already) and relaunch it. Upon launch, iTunes automatically looks for the iPod and successfully mounts the once missing iPod. Once this is done, you can safely eject your iPod as normal.

Just for additional information - my LaCie external drive does mount automatically when I wake my laptop from sleep mode.

If that doesn't work...

Several times my (3rd-gen) iPod has got into a state where iTunes won't recognise it; it mounts on the desktop, but iTunes doesn't acknowledge its existence in any way. Quitting iTunes, ejecting and reinserting the iPod, resetting both machines, trashing preferences, and various other attempts all failed. There's a lot of discussion about this problem on Apple's discussion board, but no clear explanation or fix. However, I did find one workaround: Log out, log in as another user, and start up iTunes. (If your iPod is automatically synced to your original iTunes library, then it'll give you the option of re-syncing to this one; if so, say no.) Then log out and log back in as your normal user. Hey presto, iTunes will then recognise the iPod as it should. I don't know why this gets around the problem, or if there's an easier way, but it's come up trumps every time for me, and it's easier than reinstalling iTunes (which is the only other thing that worked). Hope this helps someone out...

I've suggested using the script Unmount-Mount iPod as a short-cut fix for this dilemma in the past but have not heard the results good or bad. Sounds to me like it would assist.

The script doesn't work in this situation because it queries iTunes to get the iPod device name.. and since iTunes aint seeing the iPod... what worked for me was the hint i read somewhere else about logging in as another user. i did so and since the iPod was already connected, iTunes launched automagically and everything. then i logged back in as myself and lo, magically it's working again. odd, that one. is there some account or user-level preference happening? or is it hardware? hmm.

i have to say, as a new ipod owner, this sleep issue is probably my most glaring problem with it. apple has converted me to a person who never shuts down his machine - sleep is clearly a better solution. however, when the ipod is in the dock and connected to the firewire port and you put your machine to sleep, it stops charging. worse, it seems to drain the battery! when my machine wakes from sleep, what was previously a full battery begins to charge again.

this just seems ridiculous to me. why offer a dock if you really need to undock the ipod before you put your machine to sleep each time? i find this very irritating and i'm surprised that the ipod doesn't have a better way of dealing with it now that it's in its 3rd generation.. wake up, apple - literally!

off-topic: 2 other gripes about the ipod. 1. when listening to music that is live and divided into tracks, you get a silent pause between each track. can't the ipod crossfade to eliminate this gap? doesn't seem that tough.. 2. i like to shuffle my playlists. sometimes i don't. why isn't there an easy key-combo to turn the shuffle on and off rather than digging through the menus to get to settings every time? how about holding down the backwards and forwards buttons at the same time or something? grr.

Lucky me. I have the old 20 GB ($300 ebay) with current software and iBook 10.2.6. It wakes fine. When iBook goes to sleep, iPod does so, too, in 30 secs and starts charging. I'll now keep my fingers crossed.
