Hotsync Palm Tungstens via Bluetooth Network
I just got a Tungsten T with built-in Bluetooth and the D-Link DBT-120 Bluetooth USB adapter, and I wanted to do my Hotsync over Bluetooth rather than via the cradle. It turns out that the setup is rather non-obvious, and you can feel like you configured it right when you didn't. There isn't currently a hint on MacOSXHints about it, so here you go.

If you search on the Palm web site, you will see this Knowledge Base Entry that tells you how to do it. The key thing that you may not figure out on your own is that you need to change HotSync mode to "LANSync" using the LANSync Prefs menu item in the HotSync manager on your Palm. Once I did that (I had already figured out the other things), the HotSync started working.

How does the speed of Bluetooth sync compare to USB sync? Is there a noticeable difference one way or the other?

Also, just to be really pedantic, does this setup, once complete, work with iSync? (I'm almost positive the answer is yes; I just want to be sure before I invest $40 in a Bluetooth adapter that I don't need for anything other than my Palm.)

Interesting. I managed to get my Tungsten to sync via Bluetooth doing just about the exact opposite of what the knowledge base article tells you to do. Maybe if I'm feeling adventurous one day, I'll try that one.

In any case, to answer the next question, it does work with iSync. You must install the iSync conduit after you install the Palm Desktop software. That includes any updates to the Palm Desktop software. You'll have to reinstall the iSync conduit. And the speed via Bluetooth is much, much slower than via USB. It works fine if there isn't a lot to sync. If there is, put it on the cradle and push the button.

It does, just get the iSync Palm conduit, available on Apple's website.

Syncing over Bluetooth is far too slow to use on a regular basis...

USB and pressing the button is the way to go...

I just can't get this to work.

Palm says "Unable to initiate HotSync operation because the port is in use by another application".

When setting up the conduit in the hotsync manager there is no bluetooth serial connection to select even after installing the Palm iSync conduit.

No serial ports are created after pairing with the Palm.

HotSyncing via the cradle works fine.

Help!

Make certain that you've paired the two devices -- I had the same problem, but after the LANsync tip and re-introducing the Tungsten to my G5 bluetooth-hotsync works again!

(on my palm I went to "Connection Setup >> Edit Connection" and then selected the Device name, and my Tungsten found my G5 -- of course, my G5 bluetooth preferences had to be set to "Discoverable")

Hi - have you figured out the fix to this? I am still having trouble with the same problem. Thank you.
