A workaround for iChat AV hangups and missed connections Apps
I've been missing connections with other iChat audio users. Sometimes I'll see a message that reads "There have been no packets sent for 10 seconds." I'm not sure what this means, exactly, but quitting and restarting iChat solves the problems.

This means that you aren't sending or receiving packets reliably. You need more bandwith between the two computers.

i doubt that's the problem...both of us had our bandwidth set to 1mbps and we both have cable service. plus, it worked after i quit and restarted iChat w/out ever having to fiddle w/the bandwidth. seems more like a beta problem...

I have discovered that iChat a/v is extremely sensitive (on my 500mhz iBook) to inserting the headphone jack while in a conference -- something that isn't that unlikely since you start talking and decide to keep the conversation to yourself rather than broadcast it to the room.

If I insert the headphones while in a conference, I lose the ability to send and receive audio, immediately. Closing the chat and initiating a new one, however, works fine and I can use the headphones that way.

Ironically, something that I thought WOULD disrupt iChat (removing my USB to microphone dongle from griffin), didn't have an effect at all. The system simply switched automatically to the internal microphone.

I would have thought the complete opposite (headphone insertion would be no disruption, changing sound input device would be disastrous or at least result in a closed session).

So I am pleasantly pleased with the input, curious about the output.

Anyone else with a slower machine notice the "chop chop chop" helicopter sound? My brother noticed it when he was talking to me, I didn't hear it from his end (he has a G4 desktop, I have G3 iBook). When I spoke to a friend this evening, who has a iBook, I heard it coming from his end... I think. But the same two machines, and me in the same place but him moving from the office to home (cable modem) resulted in me hearing the chop/chop/chop...

Anyway, I am thrilled with the quality of the sound -- it is surprisingly good -- and especially with the ease of use. As someone who has experimented with various sound over internet programs over the years, this is by far the best.

chop chop chop sound

Yes, I've heard the chop, chop. I've got a Cisco Aironet 350 not an Airport.

When it was set to 30mW the chop, chop occurred. When I set it to 1mW the sound went away. It seems to be a "beating" from Wireless.

I was getting the "no packets for 10 seconds" disconnect on my 500 MHz iBook with some regularity as well, until I quit Mail. I don't know if it was the automatic checking for new mail or something else. I would suggest seeing if quitting other internet apps helps. Once you find a determining factor, submit it to Apple. It is, after all, a beta. :)
