Cure the Slashdot addiction with a one-step solution Internet
I confess to a self-destructive addiction to Slashdot. But I'm now a recovering addict thanks to my one-step program.

Pull up a Terminal window and type:
sudo echo 127.0.0.1 slashdot.org >> /etc/hosts
Then reboot your computer (experts can use niload instead of rebooting). This instantly licks impulse attempts to "just look at Slashdot for a momoment" during a "break" at work. And so far, I've resisted editing the hosts file to remove this line. An amazingly effective cure, and now I have more time to read macosxhints!

Addendum: If the above command doesn't work for you, try this version:

sudo sh -c 'echo "127.0.0.1 slashdot.org" >> /etc/hosts'
robg adds: OK, I know it's somewhat of a ridiculous hint, but heck, it's the Friday before perhaps the most amazing Apple announcement day in a number of years (check this Slashdot article (heh!) for the details), and I felt the need for a bit of humor. For those that don't know what this does and don't want to try, it will force any attempt to load slashdot.org to instead connect to your machine's webserver.]

calvin and hobbes
Authored by: SOX on Jun 20, '03 12:01:43PM
Calvin is sitting behind booth that says in crayon "Swift kick in the butt $1"

Hobbes: So how's business? (rolls eyes)

Calvin: Terrible!

Hobbes: Well I'm surprised.

Calvin: Me too. Everyone I know needs what I'm selling!

Submit it, Would be a hoot if slashdot posted it. (HA).

Nah, you can't send it to Slashdot until we get the troll whining about his 8600 taking forever to copy a file.

I checked that IP in lynx just to make sure it wasn't our favorite goat site :-)

/me realizes he needs to get out more instead of refreshing /. every 4 seconds.

Cure the Slashdot addiction with a one-step solution

What a coincidence...

I just did the same thing recently, but instead of the hosts file, I used netinfo. I also setup a vhost in apache with the following as the index file:

<span style="font-size: 150px; font-weight: bold; text-align: center; color: #990000">GET BACK TO WORK!!!</span>

Works wonders for my productivity. If I really want to view Slashdot, I use the PC at work.

This hint is not at all "funny", nor are any of the lame comments posted in response to it.

This won't get linked to by slashdot either, because not only does it fail to be "funny", but it fails to be "interesting" as well.

How do you turn it off?
Authored by: sinjin on Jun 22, '03 08:46:56AM
Please excuse my ignorance, but if I were to use this to block sites, what needs to be done to remove the block?

Thanks!

How do you turn it off?
Authored by: SOX on Jun 22, '03 02:38:46PM

sudo open /etc/hosts

delete the last line of the file

reboot.
(could also use niload but thats too dangerous if youre a newbie)

as stupid as this hint is, it has saved me an amazing amount of wasted time. its just hard enough to turn off that it takes more than a simple impulse to do it.

April Fools!
Authored by: twalther on Jun 30, '03 04:26:05AM

Use this tip to have some fun with a friend on April Fools Day (if you can gain root privilege on his/her machine). Some ideas:

--Make apple.com and www.apple.com point to Disney (the rumors are true!)
--Make their school/alma mater homepage point to their rival school's
--Point anything at http://www.doobie.com/ (great...)

The possibilities are endless.
