Install the no-ip.com client as a system service Internet
Many people use no-ip.com to run servers on dynamic IPs. This file allows the Linux version of the No-IP client to be run as a system startup service. This means that it stays running without anyone logged in, and uses next to nothing in system resources.

An added benefit is that it may also be used to find stolen systems by passing the IP alone to the police. I created this package personally.

[robg adds: I haven't tested this myself, but I did verify that the package doesn't seem to contain any malicious code.]

Authored by: sjonke on Jun 13, '03 02:06:31PM
I tried to do this but when I run make install I get a list of network interfaces that is gobbldegook. Not even "en0" "en1" and such. How do I know which one to pick? Here's an example:
Please select the Internet interface from this list.

By typing the number associated with it.
0
1
2
3 a0Z?x
4
5 stf0
6
7 ?Y??
8 ??

I believe the fink version fixes this bug.

I have this problem as well. I do not have fink (nor do I care to install it just for this purpose).

How can I tell noip2 the proper interface for en0 using the -I commandline option. If it isn't /dev/en0, then what is it?

Does anyone have instructions on creating a startup script?

No need for this, just install it with fink. 'fink install noip'
then 'sudo daemonic enable noip' and you will be all set.

wrong permissions for config file?
Authored by: phti on Jun 17, '03 01:38:28PM

it seems that the fink install method sets wrong passwords to the /sw/etc/no-ip.conf config file, so that the no-ip daemon cannot see it at startup (watch console log for errors). Actual permissions for that file are rw------- (600), I changed them to rw-r--r-- (644) to make it work.

thanks for the tip - I've installed Fink, and now noip... running
/sw/bin/noip
correctly connects to the no-ip.com "dynamic client update server" ( dynupdate.no-ip.com ) and updates the info (I used Little Snitch to check noip's connection to that particular server).

just in case the ip changes, I've also decided to add a script to /etc/periodic/daily/ (daily tasks run by cron) modeled on a stripped version of the startup script located in /Library/StartupItems/daemonic-noip/ , so that noip would run once a day.

cheers!

I tried using fink install noip but it just shows the following message:
Information about 41 packages read in 0 seconds.
Failed: no package found for specification 'noip'!
What does that mean? Is there a special installation package for fink? If so, where can I download it?

Install the no-ip.com client as a system service

Hello, I'm the author. I was not aware of the Fink method when I put this together. I based it on previous work for running the Squid cache server as a service and a Apple tech note. I have only been able to test it on a dial up connection (which is correctly identified as "ppp" during configuration). I talked to one user with this problem and we were able to figure out the right port by turrning off all other ports in the network control panel. This software is not very cleanly executed so perhaps the Fink method would be best.

Install the no-ip.com client as a system service

Is the unix/linux client better than the Mac version. I find that the Mac version normally runs around 10% on a 550MHz G4 and sometimes up to 40% with a disconnection.

Does the unix/linux version run at much lower cpu cycles and does it function fine when disconnected from the net?

Thank you!
