Troubleshooting iSync 1.1 and Symbian Phones P800 Apps
I spent two days testing the new release of iSync to finally be able to get it to work with my Sony-ericsson P800. There was no real way to do it. I could pair phone and Mac, but as I tried to connect, it gave me the same exact problem, "Could not connect to device P800."

Even trying to re-install iSync, master resetting the phone, repairing privileges, pairing and unpairing time and time again the phone and Mac -- all led me nowhere.

Then I thought of how Apple managed to sync over BlueTooth Symbian phones. Thanks to Jonas Salling who told me that they could only use PPP to sync. So I tried disabling the built-in firewall and ... WOW! It works! With further tests, I discovered that to be able to sync P800 (or any other Symbian phone like 3650, 7650), you have to open port 3004, otherwise you won't be able to connect to the phone with iSync.

According to other reports, you should really open ports 3000-3004. Apple's KB article: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93178 only mentions port 3004, but there may be other things going on on the other ports that may help other functions.

To enable iCal syncing with the P800 backup then open the file - /Library/Application\ Support/SyncService/501/SymbianConduitDefaults.plist

and edit the line that says -
<key>kNSSyncDeviceUseCalendars</key>
<false/>

to be -
<key>kNSSyncDeviceUseCalendars</key>
<true/>

Missing details - anyone else?

I don't use the firewall - so I wasn't affected by that problem - but I have found that the details of certain people are missing in AddressBook.
Has anyone else found this?

I have exactly the same problem: No firewall set up, the phone was seen by iSync straight away and promptly synced. However, on almost every contact something is missing... Now I don't dare resync in case all my P800 contacts promptly lose those items as well!

I have reported this as a bug to the iSync team, will do a support request (the iSync reports as with the Safari reports seem to disappear into a black hole!).

Syncing a Tungsten T & a Nokia 3650 with iSync, I seem to have lost a few contacts. Anyone else have this experience?

When you click the phone icon in iSync, is the preference setting "Only synchronise contacts with phone numbers" checked? If it is, this could be why...

What's this I read in several places about people losing addresses, etc? I am a bit leary of updating with that floating around. In truth to it?

Why can't it just work??
Authored by: smashing on Oct 11, '03 09:35:13AM

I have had problems with bluetooth and syncing Sony Ericsson phones (t68i, p800) from the beginning. With each update of iSync, OS X, iCal, I've hoped in vain these problems would at last be resolved. With this latest update to 10.2.8 and the heavy emphasis on bluetooth improvements, I really finally believed the whole thing would work as it should...

But it doesn't.

Can't connect, dodgy connections, t68i works, p800 doesn't, sometimes the other way round (but mainly the p800). I'm a technical user, I've disabled the firewall, I have no carriage returns in my addresses, I've reinstalled, re-paired, rediscovered... rediscovered utter frustration more like.

My PC sitting next to my mac works beautifully on both phones. What is it that I'm doing wrong?

It hurts me as a long time Mac user that the PC does it so much better. Elegance is a fine thing, but not if the dress hides a multitude of sins. I feel like a bit part player in The Crying Game.

Come on Apple, sort it out, it shouldn't be this difficult.

(For what it's worth, I have a Tecom dongle, I didn't install the BSD subsystem when first installing Jaguar. Those are the only ideas I have left.)

fwiw, i've had the t68i and now the p800. i've tried them both on the pc and mac. (bt on a pc totally sux for me). i noticed a marked difference in connection quality (# of attempts versus #number of successful completions) by the dongle mfr. i don't even try syncing via bt on the pc, but the cable sync is fine over there. on the mac the dlink dwm120 is flawless, the current belkin and the previously used ambicom and long-range belking were hit and miss at best.
