Alternative FTP client for OS X under X11 UNIX
Most FTP clients on OS X are quite slow, so I tried to find an alternative and found it. Using FinkCommander (or just fink, of course) and install axyftp, a graphical FT client running under X11.

It's very fast and reliable, and nice to look at and work with. It's a breeze to work with after I handled Transmit, RBrowser (a horrible CPU hog) or CaptainFTP. Of course it's a matter of taste, not everybody might want to start up X11 for it, but I run X11 permanently and like the Motif GUI, which is something else than the all-time Aqua. Give it a try if you like...

[robg adds: As a side note, since it's related to the subject of slow FTP clients, the Transmit 2.5 update released this week offers a major speed increase. While it was somewhat slow before, especially on large directories, it's now quite fast in all phases of operation.]

axyftp crashed big time for me both times I tried to run it. Seems very unstable.

Use Fugu. I use it all the time, and it supports sftp and scp as well as ftp. Plus, it is freeware. Source is available(written in Cocoa), and it is fast on my G3/300.

I can't get Fugu to connect to almost any ftp sites [OK I just tried two] that other ftp apps connect fine.

What could be the problem?

sftp should work just like ftp, right?

The host needs to be running a Secure FTP server, which most are not.

Fugu, which is one of the coolest apps I've used in a long time, lets you create a tunnel through SSH then use Secure Copy across the tunnel. And its nearly as easy as Fetch, which is saying alot because SSH/SCP aren't novice tools.

According to the Fugu readme, they plan to support ftp in the future, but don't seem to yet. It seems that they only plan on anonymous ftp, also.

Fugu is an excellent client as well as the venerable Fetch. When everything else fails... Fetch always comes through for me.

I don't usually ftp hundreds of files, but I do usually ftp large files [in the hundreds of megabytes], and I've used Fetch for OSX since it was available. Fetch has never let me down yet and works quite well for me. It's my ftp client of choice [I prefer its interface to Transmit's].

Since I work at a university, Fetch also offers us a very good deal on a site license; if you work for an education institution, you might want to know that Fetch is very friendly to the idea of helping you out. Talk to Fetch's developers via the contact info at their site. They were very nice to me and I recommend them, and their product, without reservation.

ncftp is an excellent FTP client available for unix. I use it as my regular ftp client, even in OSX since it's so fast. it's a text based ftp client with tab completion, and bookmark support. simple, lightweight, and fast. it also has support for recursive get and put commands, and it has support for local file system commands unlike the standard unix ftp. lls for example lists the local file system, and lpwd prints the local file system directory, lcd changes directory.. etc.
