Use hard disk aliases to control Desktop icon placement

The Finder will place disk drive icons where it thinks it is useful, not where the user wants them. This can be especially annoying the more items you have on your Desktop. There is a simple workaround for this:
- Make aliases or symlinks for your drives, and place them on the Desktop.
- In the Finder Preferences, uncheck "Hard Disks" under "Show these items on the Desktop."
- If you add a blank before the start of the name, the disks will appear (closer to) the top of the Desktop listing in every Open dialog -- similar to the open dialog in OS 8.
[robg adds: I don't keep my drive icons on the desktop, so I haven't seen any of the moving around effects discussed in this hint, but perhaps this will help someone.]
