iTunes4 shared libraries and proxies Apps
More an example of my dumbness than a hint, but still...

Two of us at work use iTunes, and could see each others' shared libraries in our iTunes browser. However, when we tried to open each others' libraries, we were unable to do so. Clicking on my colleague's library caused the info panel to show it was trying to connect, but then iTunes flipped back to my library.

We found that this is because we use a proxy server for internet connections, and neither of us had the 'Bypass proxy settings' set for our local domains. Adding our domains solved the problem.

I have a similar problem with privoxy. I have to disable privoxy to be able to connect to friends iTunes shares over internet. If I have privoxy enabled, loading the other persons library fails. Haven't digged into this yet, but maybe someone here has a solution?

I had this problem, too.

I decided to start using PithHelmet instead of Privoxy. PithHelmet is a plug-in for Safari, instead of a local proxy server. This allows me to block ads without interfering with web services apps like iTunes.

I don't have the URL handy, but you should be able to find it on VersionTracker.

Turns out apples biggest weakness is proxy settings. Your lucky cuz you have DNS names for your IP address. If you did not you would not be able to use this feature in iTunes (and file sending features in iChat). Apple doesn't allow for subnets to be bypassed (10.*, 192.168.1.*, etc.) so everything you try and do goes through the proxy server and it fails. hopefully one of these days they'll fix this, until then Rendevous is worthless to some.

Have you tried putting "10." or "192.168." in the prefs pane, instead of "10.*?" "10.*" parses as garbage, while "10." is the correct syntax for an IP network address.

I submitted a report about proxy problems shortly after iTunes 4 was released but it never appeared here. Possibly because I submitted it as an anonymous user.

Anyway, for myself, even with the appropriate bypass settings for the proxy setup, you still couldn't browse the local boxes when the proxy was enabled. When we changed the proxy so that it would relay the request to the local boxes for us, it also wouldn't work.

What we found was that the second request that iTunes made via the proxy didn't have a hostname and so the proxy didn't know what to do with it.

I can't remember the exact details so possibly the site maintainer here can find the submission and add it here. In the end though, the solution was to turn the proxy off for the moment that you initially try and browse the music on the local box. Once you have the list of files you can turn the proxy back on as everything works after that point. It is best to create a new Itunes window just for the playlist on the other box because as soon as you click some other playlist in the main iTunes window, you will loose the list of files on the other box and you would need to turn off the proxy once again to get it back.

I'm using Privoxy + Squid on my home network and song previews through the Apple store do not work. Anyone have a workaround aside from disabling Privoxy?

As far as I'm aware there is currently no known resolution to 10.2's manner of handling proxy bypass parsing, it has to do with the way it determines wild carding, but that's beside the point. It doesn't work. Apple is aware of this issue, and hopefully it will be included in an Update soon. It's not much fun having great features of a program that you just can't use.
