Use smart playlists in iTunes4 to track required backups Apps
If you, like me, don't relish the task of re-ripping your entire CD collection after a hard disk failure, then you've probably enjoyed iTunes4's CD/DVD playlist backup facility. However, keeping track of what you've backed up can be a pain. Here's a simple solution.

After your first full backup, create a smart playlist with the following condition: Date Added - is after - "the date you last backed up". Over time, the smart playlist will fill up with songs you've added until it reaches a size suitable for burning to CD/DVD.

Ok - I'm not seeing it either - is it the "Burn Playlist" menu selection? I know there are some AppleScripts out there that will do this - but I had no idea that it existed as a function in iTunes...

...any help appreciated....

I'm not seeing it either, went through all iTunes 4.0 prefs. Please be more specific, and explain how this backup feature works.

Go to preferences, then click on 'Burning'.

Where you used to only be able to select Music CD or MP3 CD, you can now choose data CD or Data DVD (if you have a supported DVD-R drive).

It says you might not be able to read it on all players, which suggests it writes to HFS or HFS+ format. I've not tried it myself.

Then just burn a playlist as usual. For a DVD it seems you can have up to 4.3 GB or so in the playlist...

Ahhhh - so its not as sophisticated as I was hoping for. Some of the past Applescripts will actually collect what needs to be backed up comparing with past backups, etc. The built-in iTunes "Backup" is no more than burning a data cd....

Could always just use Retrospect and back up your iTunes folder as a sub-volume ....

Well there are of course 100 different methods of manually backing up the MP3 files.... I think what I was looking for was a nice integrated iTunes backup method. No muss no fuss... iTunes keeps an eye on whats new and needs to be backed up, creates CD (or DVD) size disk images with just the files to backup, then all you have to do is burn the image. At least thats my pipe dream...
