Playing iTunes' AAC-encoded music on a PC

I've been wondering how to play my AAC tracks encoded by iTunes at home on my office PC. I thought the latest QuickTime for MS Windows (v6.1.1) would do that, but no such luck. First, it didn't recognize the .M4A extension. Next, opening M4A files via the File menu only resulted in some error message (stating that the file is corrupted...). So I tried changing the extension: .AAC still didn't cut it, but then - finally - .MP4 did - yeah!

[robg adds: Note that this hint helps you play MP4 tunes that you've ripped yourself, not any protected songs purchased from the store.]
