Make interesting iTunes playlists using beats per minute Apps
One "tag" you can add to MP3 files is "beats per minute" (BPM), at least in iTunes4 (I never noticed it before, but it may have been there). Adding this BPM info to your files allows for some interesting playlists such as the following:
  • A playlist of songs that move at the same speed you walk.
  • A playlist of songs that is ideal for doing exercises at your normal speed.
  • A playlist of songs that promotes better learning -- some research says 60 bpm is ideal for this.
  • A playlist that is the same tempo as your target heart rate.
  • You can sort your playlists using the BPM field, so tunes either gradually get faster or slower.
Using a free online tool, such as the Beats Per Minute Calculator, you can easily find the BPM of your tunes. Note that you can find this same JavaScript at many places around the web; this one had no advertising on it. You can also download it "as source" to use it offline.

You can also get a script for iTunes called iTunes-BPM that will let you click along with the beat like that web page...but then will go ahead and set the ID3 field for BPM for you as well. I've been using it for a few days and am pretty happy with it.
