Display iTunes4 album covers with currently playing track Apps
So, you love the new iTunes4. You have downloaded some music from the store, and you love the exclusive Counting Crows tracks that you now have. Your only beef with the new app? The album cover feature. When the song comes up, it doesn't automatically display the album cover in the bottom left, it only displays the "selected track" which may be something completely different.

Click on the "Selected Song" text above the artwork well,0 and the mode will switch to "Now Playing" and will keep pace with your playlist. I was about to write off this new feature until random clicking won my heart.

[robg adds: I wonder why they didn't default to "Now Playing" in the first place? This is documented in the iTunes help, but it requires some digging to find (I searched on "artwork"). You can also click the artwork to open it in its own window.]

There's also a great freeware app called Clutter that automatically looks up the album cover for the currently-playing song in iTunes. You can then drag that album cover to your desktop, and double- click it next time you want to listen to that album. It also allows you to copy that cover image to the clipboard. Then, if you use Get Info on a song in iTunes 4 and go to the Artwork tab, you can paste it in there.

Clutter really is a very nifty application. Even when it can't find the cover by itself, it has options for you to manually specify the search either in Amazon or in Google, and once you find it, you can just drag the image from your browser into the Clutter window.

And from the author's web log, it seems he is already investigating how to make Clutter integrate nicely with iTunes 4.... :-)

Don't forget Synergy!

Retrieves album covers from Amazon automatically. You can
drag and drop onto iTunes from :

Recent versions of Clutter have a "copy cover to iTunes" menu option that saves a few steps. I use it all the time, it's my favorite feature of the most recent upgrade I did.

My only wish would be for some way to modify ID3 tags (album art et al) on "authorized" machines. I've got my laptop, a PC at work, and a PC at home; I've moved most of my music to the two PCs in order to save space on my laptop, now that iTunes is available for Windows. Unfortunately, in order to modify the info for a given track, I need to actually be sitting at the PC. Ah well.

I love this hint! However, I seem to be getting a bug.

When I have the album artwork displayed in Safari, and the
selected song(s) info window opened, and I drag and drop the
.jpg from Safari, it appears in reversed and upside down in
iTunes.

If I drag the image to the desktop first, and then to iTunes, it
displays properly.

Any ideas?

By the way, by accident, I was able to drop the same image into
iTunes' info window twice. So, it looks like you can have
multiple images stored in a song. Only the first image appears
in the preview window, but you can view all of them in the
Artwork pane of the Info window.

I thought album covers were going to be nabbed by iTunes 4
(just as Clutter and Synergy do) but that doesn't seem to be the
case. Anyone see any different results?

it does that only if you purchase via the iTunes Music Store.

Synergy grabs its from Amazon.

Would prefer iTunes to be able to grab album cover from Music
Store for existing songs.

AppleScript Saves The Day! Maybe...
Authored by: displaced on Apr 29, '03 06:50:23PM

Okay - I've spent the evening working on an AppleScript that uses
XML-RPC to get album art from Amazon.

You select an album, run the script, choose which album (if there's
multiple hits), the picture's downloaded...

... all I need to do now is get the artwork into iTunes. Looking at
the AppleScript dictionary, there's an 'artwork' class .... but I can't
figure out how to add a new artwork to a track!

Any help would be appreciated. Solve this, and I can put the script
out for peple to use! It'll be free, of course...

Maybe try contacting Malcom Adams over at Doug's Applescripts
http://www.malcolmadams.com/itunes/index.shtml

He might be able to help. I hope you figure it out!

Some songs/albums have "Not modifiable" in the Album Artwork
box. Any idea how to make them modifiable?

Maybe upgrade the ID3 tags for that track to a newer version? (Just a guess.)

This was an issue for me as well.

Looking around, I found that the directory permissions on many of my music directories was read-only. This must have happened when I copied all of the music from my wife's home directory into my home directory.

Here is what I did to correct it.

1. Open a terminal window.
2. Change directory to the iTunes folder by typing 'cd ~/Music/iTunes' (without the quotes) and hit enter.
3. Type 'sudo chmod -R a+rw *' and hit enter.
4. Enter your accounts password and hit enter.
5. Close and reopen iTunes.

That should take care of it!
