Automatically open external links in tabs in Safari beta 2 Web Browsers
Normally I have Safari set to open a new window when I click a link in Mail or some other external app; otherwise the page I'm reading gets overwritten. With the advent of tabbed browsing in Safari I was really hoping for Safari automatically creating a new tab in the same window, rather than open a new one, but it didn't seem to be in the Tabs panel of the preferences.

The trick is to set the option for "Open links from applications" to "in the current window" within the General options, with tabbed browsing activated. Though it doesn't explicitly say it anywhere, when set up like this, Safari creates a new tab in the same window for each link clicked in another app.

[robg adds: This seems completely non-intuitive to me, but sure enough, it works as expected! I had left the setting at "New window" to prevent over-writing what I had already opened; changed it and now links open in tabs ... cool!]

Hint: Use with NetNewsWire!!!
Authored by: luhmann on Apr 28, '03 11:46:40AM

I had never really enjoyed reading the news with NetNewsWire,
but as soon as Safari Beta 2 came out I set things up this way
and found that NetNewsWire worked a thousand times better.

Hint #1: you can set NetNewsWire to open links in the
background!!! This means you can simply hit "return" for each
story you want to read and know that they are all loading up in
Safari Tabs in the background!

Hint #2: If you sign up for Newsisfree.com's premium service
you can get RSS feeds of the New York Times, Washington Post,
Financial Times, etc. all of which work with NetNewsWire (you
even get a 30 day demo).

Now my only problem are web sites that still don't have RSS
feeds - I seem to have stopped looking at them....

Automatically open external links in tabs in Safari beta 2

I wonder if this is intentional or just a bug introduced while developing tabbed support and it will disappear in later versions.

Wouldn't "completely non-intuitive" mean that it doesn't work as expected? ;-)

New windows from Yahoo mail...
Authored by: kon21 on Apr 28, '03 07:50:26PM

What you guys said makes sense for external applications that load pages. How do I fix this same behavior internally in Safari?
I use Yahoo Mail. Anytime there is a link in my email, Safari/Yahoo insists on opening the link in a new window. How can I set it to load the link in a tab?

TIA.

New windows from Yahoo mail...

but i remember in Mozilla that i could set open in new window as
open in new tab, so when i click on a link it would open in a new tab.

and is there a way to get it to just open in the same window?

Well, that and having a "non-Apple" mouse. I just click my
Scroll Wheel on any link and it opens in a tab.

I also was a big fan of being able to have all _blank links just
open up in a new tab, wish it would come to Safari.
