A caution on reinstalling Jaguar on a 12" iBook System
I just bought a 12" iBook. It wouldn't recognize a shared printer, so the dealer suggested I reinstall Jaguar using the "Erase Disk" option, since I didn't have much data on it.

After reinstall, the Setup Assistant wouldn't run because the system didn't recognize the display, and the desktop showed up at about two-thirds size. Additionally, the "Software Update" option wouldn't display in "System Prefs," and disk images would mount, but not open.

I called Apple Support. They were very cooperative, nice and supportive. After about an hour, they determined that the install disks sent with the iBook were the wrong ones. Better yet, there was no correct set immediately available. They said they will ship me disks "as soon as they are available," which is nice, but for the next few days the iBook is an iPaperweight.

Yao wouldn't be happy.

Until you verify the serial numbers on your install disk with Apple support, DO NOT reinstall OSX on the 12" iBook.

A caution on reinstalling Jaguar on a 12" PowerBook
Authored by: diamondsw on Apr 28, '03 10:33:14AM

This probably has to do with the new speed bumped iBook. I installed Jaguar last weekend on my Nov. 2002 iBook and it worked fine. Used the CD's that shipped with the machine.

Also, the tip should refer to the iBook, not the Powerbook (as it probably does not have this problem).

First - he got a new iBook already? My order has been on hold for 10 days at the Apple Store.

Secondly, can we verify whether this was a newer iBook or the older 700-800 Mhz one? What are the exact specifications?

If it is a newer one, and mine suffers the same problems (when it arrives), I better get an iPod out of the deal... ;)

I had a ten day delay with my initial order for an 800Mhz iBook, Apple then cancelled it and upgraded my order to the new 900 Mhz and delayed it 10 days again. My guess is I will get it in July sometime.

This is not JUST the newer iBooks, but it will not effect the old modles (the blue and orange), It also happens with the 9 install disks, u MUST use the ones shipped with your iBook unless (like this case) apple stuffed up and sent the wrong cd's

This isn't your fault. Apple should know its loyal customers are going to have more than one set of install disks around and put up a reminder that the disks are meant for another machine and allow you to proceed at your own risk.

they do say there for a certain machine on them, look down the bottom of the software restore CD.

Im not sure we can blame apple for this since they didn't know the iBook displays will have to use non-standard drivers and what they woulod be before the actually released it. Tho they should have included it in the iBook manual which they didn't

Look back at the slot loading iMacs and the 10.2 install disks. that was something Apple could be blamed for, this not so

are you referring to a powerbook or Ibook. They are
different Beast though the package appear pretty similar.

A Powerbook is a G4 in there, while a ibook is a G3 in there.

A powerbook is brushed aluminium casing while the ibook is
whole Polycarbonate casing...

which one are you referring to?

meanwhile, I loaded the Jaguar for the ibook on the 15"
Powerbook without errors.

I think he's referring to the PowerBook -- the new 900MHz iBook appears to be architecturally identical to the 800MHz, so installing Jaguar on it shouldn't be a problem at all. The 12" PowerBook on the other hand, while apparently based on the iBook architecture rather than the existing PowerBook architecture, does have some significant differences.

My Mistake!!!

While editing this hint this morning, I accidentally changed the title to PowerBook. I just re-checked it against the master database of original hint submissions, and it clearly refers to the 12" iBook.

Sorry for all the confusion...

Does anybody else have a problem that the dealer told him to reinstall Jaguar because it wouldn't recognize a printer? That's a great troubleshooting technique ;(

Did you try the Software Restore CD?

I've reinstalled OS X on a 600MHz iBook (white) using the
disks which came with an 800MHz iBook (white). However,
the Software Restore application which came with the faster
iBook refuses to work on the slower iBook. I can still reinstall
the software by using Terminal to get to the ".images"
directories on the Software Restore disks, manually
mounting the disk images and installing from those.

Or have you tried softwareupdate in Terminal.app? You said that the SoftwareUpdate.prefPane didn't show up, and I'm not sure that Software Update is going to have the drivers that you apparently need, but it's worth a shot while you wait.

Is your CD corrupted?
Authored by: a1291762 on Apr 28, '03 06:59:18PM

This sounds a bit fishy to me... I did have an "experience" installing 10.2 on an iBook (the first QE-compatible generation) but the problem was a corrupted install CD. The OS X installer doesn't notify you that there's a problem reading the CD, it just installs what it can (in my case, not even enough to boot the system). If you open the Installer Log, you can see if there's a problem reading the install CD.

I bought my wife a 700 iBook with Jaguar on it and reinstalled my 500 iBook with her disks. I haven't had any problems.

Well... legal issues aside [[nearly puts out his back trying to shove that mountain aside temporarily]]
OS X installer CD's are backwards-compatible, but not forward- compatible.
You can't expect a year-old CD to have all the necessary drivers for a current unit. For example, you wouldn't expect a 10.1.3 installer CD to support a unit that shipped with 10.2.4 installed, would you ?
As for the original post, this does not seem right/"normal." Not at all - every new Apple unit normally ships with the appropriate system installer CD(s). However, it's certainly possible that the wrong CD's were packed & shipped with the box, or that CD #1 is corrupt/compromised. That is unlikely, yet certainly possible. Either way, terribly unfortunate !

Am I right that this problem won't happen with a non-OEM,
commercially-purchased version of Jaguar (which is what I am
using on my 600 mhz iBook)? It's interesting that Apple would
strip down the OEM CD's. And would this not-forward-compatible
problem still apply, preventing the use of the non-OEM general
CD's as a remedy for situations like this one?

um..

It is there. You scroll down.

I saw this on every one of 15 iBooks i just restored. Software Update gets you 10.2.5, which cures it.
