Hold down Command and Shift, and you can then drag an icon from an unfocused window. This also works with icons in the title bar of unfocused windows.

Uses for this might be to drag the icon of a folder onto a save or open sheet without digging around, not needing to switch to the Finder (unless that window is obscured), or to drag a new document's icon to the current appliction's icon in the Dock for easy opening without switching to the Finder or triggering the "Open file" sheet.

[robg adds: We've run previous hints on using the Command key to manipulate background window scrollbars and position, but this is new as best as I can tell -- I didn't know it was possible to manipulate Finder objects without activating the Finder (having tried just the Command key a number of times)].
