Listen to Amazon.com CD track previews via VideoLan Client Apps
I was at the Amazon.com page for the new Stephen Lynch record, and found that -- as is usual on Amazon.com -- the first several tracks have preview links next to them. They don't use QuickTime, so that puts off a lot of Mac users. The available formats are Real (ugh) and Windows Media (believe it or not, I'd rather have this than Real). Unfortunately, if you click on the link, depending on your browser, you might get hit with a .exe file.

The interesting part is that they're not always Windows executables. Sometimes, it appears, they're really streams or entire clips. If you have a copy of the awesome VideoLAN Client (VLC) player, your problems are easily solved. Hop into the Finder, assuming it was downloaded, and rename it from filename.exe to filename.asx, and then double-click it or drop it onto VLC. Whee!

I might get flamed for submitting an obvious and simple hint, but perhaps there are some novice users out there who haven't thought about this one yet.

I must concur. I am a relatively sophisticated user, but I had
never stopped to consider why some Amazon files came out as
.exe's. I just never cared enough to think about it. So don't
assume that technical skill means a solution to even basic
problems; some of us just don't stop to think about every
problem we encounter.

Like the name of the site says, Mac OS X Hints.
If people are only expecting Mac OS X Epiphanies and/or Eurekas, then
they are at the wrong site. (not that epiphanies/eurekas don't show up
here.)

Don't worry about the flames, just keep sending in the hints.

most appreciated,
Doctor Osos

the real player for os x is just as good software as the video lan
client. probably better. i think it takes less CPU. you should give
it a try before you slag it.

use VideoLan Client v.0.5.1a

If you're having trouble w/ the latest version of VLC, you might want to try version 0.5.1a. This version seems to be a lot more stable than later releases.
