Importing Now Contact data into Address Book Apps
This is a fairly simple trick if you are fortunate enough to own an iPod. Use the utility (NowPak) that PowerOn Software supplies with Now Contact/Up To Date to send your contacts to your iPod.

Now navigate to the database on the iPod, or copy the database off the iPod, and simply import it into Address book.

Importing Now Contact data into Address Book

[Hmmm, I'm fairly certain I'd already posted this comment. Wonder
what happened.]

NowSoftware has been working on a version of Contact that will two-
way synchronize with Address Book. At MacWorldExpo in January they
told me it was 1-2 weeks away. Last week there was a quick story on
it at powerpage.org. Hopefully it'll be out soon.

Two-way sync is one step towards a contact database panacea, when
all contact-type apps (email, fax, general contect, etc) simply use the
Address Book database as their storage. Two-way sync will be nice,
but the whole point of Address Book isn't to give users a low-powered
contact app - it's to give developers the API.

[Now I know what happened! I clicked Preview, but probably never
finalized the posting. Not used to having just Preview and no Post.
Ah well, my bad.]

slightly buggy...

I've had mixed luck with this in the past. the iPak (at least v
1.0) doesn't properly handle long notes in the "notes" field; it
adds a line break (I forget if it's a CR or an LF) that causes a
premature EOF in the single huge vCard that the iPak creates. I
ended up having to edit the vCard in BBEdit to make all of my
contacts visible...so, if not all of your contacts are appearing,
you can A) split up the resulting vCard file to troubleshoot and
B) check the "notes" fields for extra characters.

non-iPod workaround?
Authored by: jspivack on Apr 24, '03 01:09:51AM

I wonder if this would work without an iPod simply by creating a
disk image at /Volumes called "my iPod" or something...

[note to bignumbers--I think this has been discussed in
comp.sys.mac.??; perhaps that's where you remember it from]

Another related hint that I discovered 2 weeks ago is that I can sync Now Up To Date with iCal by using my Palm. I installed the iSync conduit and reactivated the Now Up To Date conduit, so now when I sync it puts NUTD on my Palm and then downloads it to iCal (and syncing again will put changes from iCal onto NUTD since iCal will have modified the Palm after the first sync). Very handy, because my household uses NUTD but I like iCal.
