Change the order of third-party contextual menu items System
I use several different contextual menu item plugins, including PicturePopCM (which allows you to preview pictures and pdfs in the Finder with a "Show with PicturePop" menu item), OnMyCommandCM, FileUtilsCM, and QuickAccessCM. All of these plugins are in my Contextual Menu Items folder in ~/Library.

I noticed that when I control-click on an item, the order that these items were listed in the contextual menu corresponded to the order that the plugins were listed in the Finder (in list view). I wanted "Show with PicturePop" to be the topmost contextual menu item shown, so on a hunch, I renamed the PicturePopCMPlugIn.plugin file with a space in front of the name. As I hoped, this caused it to appear at the top of the Finder list, and at the top of the contextual menu.

This hint should work with any CM plugin that resides in your Contextual Menu Items folder, not just the ones I used.

[robg adds: I have not tested this one myself.]

Change the order of third-party contextual menu items

i would avoid the use of spaces at the beginnings of filenames--
remember os x is unix and also remember the os update that
wiped hard drives that had files with names beginning with
spaces.

i'd simply add an 'a' to the beginning of the filename.

I've been using spaces at the beginning of files/folders' names
without problem.

me too, i have several subfolders in both Applications & Utilities
whose names start with space, the system works fine.. Unix can
handle the spaces as long as the applications and shell scripts
are written correctly

I wonder if there's a way to add an invisible character [or one that's hardly noticeable, i.e., not 'z'] so that an item will be listed at the *bottom* of the contextual menu?

I like to rearrange my Applications folders so that I have a few folders with aliases [Graphics, Internet, Music, etc], which point to the actual Apps. So for now, I have a folder called "zApplication Folders" inside /Applications, where the apps and their folders live.

Frankly, I'd just as soon not see that folder on the menu, but I'll take what I can get.

To do that, I use a mix of spaces, Opt-8 & Shift-Opt-9, as well as renaming
the items. Crude, esp. since special characters do not sort as they used to in
OS9, but not too ugly...
