Print Center crashes when Epson 740 is out of ink System
There's a issue with the Print Center, at least with the Epson 740 drivers, that I've never seen documented. My 740 is connected to the Mac via a powered USB hub. If you run out of ink, either black or color, the Print Center will crash when the print job goes to print. The ink indicator has to be solid red, not the blinking indicator (blinking indicates that you're low on ink). But this crash happens every time, even in 10.2.4.

This may also happen to other printers, but I don't have a good way to test this. Basically, if Print Center is crashing, check your printer's ink levels.

[robg adds: I've got a blinking red indicator on my Epson C90 right now; I'll see what happens when it goes solid red...]

Print Center crashes when Epson 740 is out of ink

I've had a lot of problems with my Epson 820 since I ran out of colored ink. It wouldn't let me print only in black (a pain while waiting for a new cartridge) but since I replaced the color cartridge I get frequent kernel panics when the computer finishes spooling the print job.

The print job comes out complete even though I'm getting the multilaguaged "You're ^&#*$$" kernel panic message before actual printing starts.

This is in 10.2.4

I've got a 740 but have never had this problem and it's run out of ink three or four times.

I have a 740 which frequently flashes that it is out of ink. However, after I launch Print Utility and access the wells, I simply press down on the ink containers, close, perform another status check, and in every instance it indicates I have sufficient ink levels.

I had an ink cartridge solid red yesterday and I tried to print and it didn't crash, it merely stopped the queue.

Ditto. Actually happened last night, while I was printing out a batch of newsletters. I wonder if the original poster has a permissions problem or missing driver...

I remember back in the day when my Epson 888 ran out of ink with OS 9.0.4 it also crashed.

This seems to be an ongoing issue...

Hmm, my 740 ran out of colored ink the night before last, and I didn't notice any problems with Print Center.
