Switching tabs via the keyboard in Safari Beta 2 Web Browsers
I accidentally found out how to switch between open tabs in Safari Beta 2 without reaching for the mouse. You just have to press Command-Shift and at the same time, use the left and right arrow keys to move to the left or to the right through your opened tabs.

Woohoo. Cough. Those are the keyboard equivalents of "Select
Next Tab" and "Select Previous Tab", located in the Window
menu.

Hmmm. I have neither the Window Menu nor the Keyboard
Shortcut version of tab-switching... Anyone else
seeing the same thing?

Same for me -- command-shift-leftarrow and command-shift-
rightarrow don't switch tabs for me -- rather they work like the
next and previous buttons.

You probably have not turned on the tab feature. It's in
Preferences. Select the Tabs icon and check the box labeled
"Enable Tabbed Browsing."

There wouldn't be any tabs for him to not be able to switch between if tabs weren't enabled. It sounds like there's some other problem here.

Solution: Download Instead of SWUpdate
Authored by: nicksay on Apr 15, '03 02:24:04PM

On a hunch that Apple might be serving up different versions, I
downloaded Beta 2 from Apple's page (http://
www.apple.com/safari/download), opened the disk
image, and replaced my copy of Safari with the
new one. Voila! Cmd-Shift-[arrow] tab switching
works and the Window menu has the correct
commands. I had used Software Update to get the
new Beta, but it seems that the SWUpdate version
isn't quite right (though both were listed as v73).
So, if you're having the problem I had, try a direct
download.

I don't buy this. Here's why. I downloaded mine via SWUpdate
within 10 minutes of it being posted.

Mine works fine. <shrug>

Who knows.

Same here. I downloaded the Beta 2 from SW Update within
minutes of it appearing there, and I can switch easily with the
said keyboard shortcuts, so it must be some other problem
users are seeing here.

Nice find, I've been dying to know this. It's just a shame it's a
two handed operation unlike the nice Apple+~ for window
switching.

try getting a pro keyboard then, with duplicate command keys
on the right...

You can easily change the k/b command to a one-handed thing
(I set mine to cmd-esc). Search macosxhints for instructions, or
else use a third party app like youpi key.

I agree with you about the two handed thing. I have a full size
keyboard, but my fingers don't conveniently bend easily to hit
that key combo. It would be nice if it were a little simpler, esp.
since I've discovered that tabbed browsing is good for porn... ;)

Does anyone know of any easy way to change the key combo?

changing the keyboard shortcut

either follow the tutorial posted today at resexcellence.com (it's
very simple) or use Unsanity's new haxie Menu Master.

Scroll Wheel Mouse to change tabs via USB Overdrive
Authored by: luhmann on Apr 15, '03 02:40:05PM

I've set up USB overdrive to work with my scroll wheeel mosue
so that when I have the scroll wheel clicked down it will scroll
between tabs. Simply assign "Command-Shift-Left" to Clicked-
Scroll-Down, and "Command-Shift-Right" to Clicked-Scroll-Up,
and you are good to go!!!

The shortcuts that you give are also given in the menu Window.

Select Next Tab
Select Previous Tab

Hint: Look in the menus before experimenting. ;-)

Several menu items were missing for me including the ones for
next and previous tab (as well as "new tab" and "close tab").
These features worked on my other Macs so i knew something
was wrong. I tried deleting the preference files but that didn't fix
it. I found i had run SafariEnhancer in the past so I ran that
program and reset defaults -- then it came up and said there
was a new version. I downloaded the new version and ran it.
Now all my menu items and keyboard shortcuts for them are
back. I also, in the process, made sure I removed a little util I
had once installed called MenuExtraEnabler. That might have
been what was causing the problem. One of the above corrected
the problems.

it was more likely Safari Enhancer. Menu Extra Enabler has to
do with the menu extras -- things ending with .menu. The
monitor, battery, clock, etc. that come with the OS are located in
/System/Library/CoreServices/MenuExtras. Some third party
menu extras, such as Unsanity's Cee Pee You, need Menu Extra
Enabler to function.
