Sort Mail's sent mail into folders via rules Apps
If you want Mail.app to put away in specific mailboxes not just the messages you receive, but your Sent messages as well, you're out of luck. It has to be done manually, but at least you can use Rules for it. Instead of defining a Rule with the "From" header, add a "To or From" header to the default headers. Amazingly, this works.
  1. Make a new Rule (or edit an existing one) in Preferences
  2. From the popup menu with criteria, choose "Edit Header List..."
  3. Define a new header called "To or From" and close the Edit Header sheet
  4. Now select "To or From" instead of "From" as the matching criterium for any Rule
  5. Add additional criteria as desired, including destination folder
  6. Save the rule and close the rules window.
When your Sent mailboxes is getting crowded, select all messages in it and choose Apply Rules to Selection in the Message menu (option-command-L), and messages you sent to your girlfriend will be put in the same mailboxes that contain messages you received from her.

Does this confer any advantage over making a rule with your email address as a "from" and the person in question's address as a "to"? That's what I've been doing, and apart from having to manually filter the messages, it works well.

What I'd love to know is why incoming messages that are filtered to mailboxes automatically don't result in a count on the dock icon. This means that when Mail is hidden, you only get notification of messages from people you don't have filtered mailboxes for. Crazy.

And while I'm at it, is there a way to get a BCC field when composing emails?

I just realised after I posted that the point of this hint is that it allows you to make one rule to do both To and From. Sorry for being slow today :-)

However, I'm interested to know what happens when someone sends an email with two people in the "To" field: you and someone else you've got filters for. Might it end up in the mailbox you made for the other recipient, since it matches them on the "To" criterion before the sender in the "From" criterion?

To get a BCC field while composing mail, hit Cmd-Shift-B.

Another advantage to GyazMail is its ability to run rules on both incoming and outgoing messages automatically.

For just two folders, you can make a rule action that MOVES it to the first and then COPYs it to the second. For more than two, I don't know.

An old topic I know, but once you have sorted your sent messages in to new mailboxes, is there any way to make the new mailbox show who the message was to and not who it was from (me obviously) without changing the columns in all my other mailboxes.

It must be possible as the Sent mailbox does this (when I click on it, the From column changes to a To).

In other words, is there any way to have the columns shown decided on a mailbox by mailbox level, rather than globally (as seems to happen when I choose which columns to show from the View/Columns-> menu option)

Thanks!
