Set up SpamAssassin Milter on OS X's sendmail UNIX
From the same whacko (me) who actually spent the time telling you in detail how to set up a customized mount point system under OSX comes another rather long-winded tail of how to set up SpamAssassin Milter under OS X.

As with all of my tips, this is NOT for the faint at heart. Compilation of three applications is required, so the Developer Tools must be installed. Symlinking of Apple-installed binaries. Things like that ... be brave.

Oh, and if I may pander to the Fink Developers out there, please consider making packages for this!

[robg adds: SpamAssasin Milter is a plug-in for sendmail that routes all incoming mail through the SpamAssassin spam filter. As Numbski notes, this is not for the beginners, though it sounds very very useful (coming from someone who gets about 80 pieces of spam a day). I hope to find the time to work through the setup in the near future, but for now, consider it untested.]

Anyone use spamassassin and DNS black lists together? Or is one better than the other? trying to figure out which would be best.

SpamAssassin can be configured to do RBL tests, and add those to its overall spamminess score for a message. This is probably better than just using sendmail with RBL blocks set up, since it will be an input to a rating, instead of a hard bounce.

My own experience with RBLs is that if you use them to just bounce messages, you lose important mail. I won't be enabling them by themselves ever again!

Ditto. RBL was a good option before Bayesian filtering became so ubiquitous (and good) -- now all I use is the latter.

PS - Did you ever use BeOS? Your name sounds really familiar...

Site is down - anyone have copies of the startup scripts?
Authored by: HSpirit on May 06, '03 12:09:09AM

The site is currently refusing HTTP connections from me.

The instructions have been cached by Goggle, but not the downloads.

Can anyone supply me a copy of spamd.sh, site.config.m4, spamass-milter.sh and dailySpamStats.tar.gz?

Also, any tips on recompiling sendmail on OSX 10.1.5 will be appreciated - I am a bit apprehensive about this as I've been using Apple's precompiled sendmail distribution for my office without issue up until now.

Thanks muchly in advance for any assistance.

I don't see the actual article...

Pardon me if I'm being dumb, but I don't see the actual article. All I find is a note saying that the author of Numbski wrote an article, but the article itself doesn't seem to exist. Perhaps if someone can find this at some point they could actually mirror it on MacOSXHints.com?
