A workaround for playing Panasonic Realtime DVD Recorder Discs System

For those of you having problems playing DVDs written on Panasonic realtime DVD recorders (DMR series) try running the DVD Player application as root...

The problem is that the DVD recorder only gives read permissions (no execute permissions!). As such, the DVD Player application can't even traverse the hieararchy of the disc as a regular user. The VIDEO_TS folder and its parent must have execute permissions...

Obviously, this should only be a temporary solution until Apple addresses it. I'm not condoning running any app as root as the app may leave cache files etc. lying around.

P.S. I haven't tested this with other burned DVDs but it may apply to them as well...

[robg adds: I have no idea if this one is true or not; if someone could confirm via a comment, I'd appreciate it...]

A workaround for playing Panasonic Realtime DVD Recorder Discs

I can confirm that this works. Discovered this a few weeks ago when we got a new Panasonic DVD-recorder at work. The resulting dvd's had problems on a wide range of DVD-players, and also on our Dual 867 G4. Tried logging in as root, and that worked. Can't remember why I tried that, but I think the DVD Player.app reported permission errors?

I can confirm that the reason is such. The permissions are not correct and if I run the DVD player as root it works fine.

I use Snard, which allows me to run any app as root for this purpose.

I can't see why Apple should "fix" this. Panasonic clearly made a mistake by assigning too restrictive rights on the directories. So it is up to them to revise their firmware.
If Apple changed the way removable media filesystems are accessed, they would herbly violate UN*X filesystem conventions. Definitely not desirable.

Beware! Workaround for playing Panasonic Realtime DVD-R Discs not fully funtional
Authored by: ryensen on Mar 13, '03 09:20:55AM

I tried this too and it appears to work, but on closer inspection it does
not allow the DVD Player application to play the full length of the files. So
a 1 gigabyte segment plays only for a short while, perhaps to the first
chapter marking?

I am told by other sites that the files have a special structure and in the
PC world I think Ulead has come out with an editor for them.

It sure would be nice to have a fully interactive MPEG-2 editor for the
Mac that would edit VOB files in the regular DVD format and in the
special Panasonic format. Perhaps this could include a special DVD Player
app just for these strangely protected and formatted files too?
