This is one of those hints that may seem exceptionally obvious to people, but may not have occurred to others: if you wish to conserve battery life on your laptop and don't require network access, turn off your AirPort card (which can be easily done via the menu extra).

Extend battery life by turning off AirPort
It's not just AirPort that can drain your battery. All of the networking interfaces will draw power when they are active. So if you are using only AirPort, you should turn off the internal modem, ethernet, and Bluetooth.
Extend battery life by turning off AirPort
I called my location with everything disabled:
Working Without A Net. {grin}
Extend battery life by turning off AirPort
Why does it consume energy to have modem and ethernet enabled even if nothing is connected?
Extend battery life by turning off AirPort
This doesn't actually work. I've spoken with support techs, and the airport card never actually gets turned off. The menu extra does disable the network interface, but the hardware is not ever powered off unless you remove it. I suppose this is part of the kernel extension and why the Airport Extreme hacks to work with other cards have problems when you remove the 802.11g cards.
Re: Extend battery life by turning off AirPort
I'm sorry; I must disagree with your belief. As the submitter of the hint, within a few seconds of when I turn AirPort off, my Battery menu extra revises its estimate of remaining time and produces a larger figure. |
