Force a reply-from address in a multiple Mail account Apps
I have my work computer set up to also check my home email account with Mail. The problem is that I can't reply from this account at work. If I reply to a message sent to my home address at work and forget to manually switch the reply account, I have to hold the mail for later, go to the outbox, open the message again, and then change the account info. I've been trying for months to figure out how to set a default account for replies in Mail with no luck.

I finally discovered a very simple work around. Go to preferences in mail and select Accounts, then select the account that you can't reply through and click the Edit button. Once the edit field is open, go to the Email Address field and replace the normal email address for the account with the address of the account you want to respond from. It is that easy ... go figure!

[robg adds: I believe this works because Mail doesn't use the Email address to get your inbound mail, it uses the Incoming Mail Server and User Name / Password fields a bit further down ... and keep in mind this hint is for using the same Mail account on two different machines with a sending limitation on the second machine.]

Another hint (Simple, but took me a while to find out :-)

You can also configure your Apple Mail to read mails from .mac IMAP but send them with a more powerful SMPT connection (.mac has a 3MB limit). This way you can also change your from: adresse if you don't want to show your .mac adresse to others (I prefer to be flexible in case Apple decides to double the price for .mac ...).

Okay, but can you get it to use the address it was sent to as the reply-to? My issue is that I have a catch-all account. I use this to track who is selling my address for spam...i.e...
amazon@mydomain.com
apple@mydomain.com

they both get forwarded to my real address...
BUT, I'd like to be able to reply to mail sent there and have the reply-to address use that instead of the account that it came in on.

Any ideas?

Yeah, I'm a switcher from Mutt. With Mutt I can write a "rule" to change my from address depending on what email address the to field is. This is really helpfull because I have three different projects with about 10 different email addresses.

In Mail.app, I have to select from a list. It's just a matter of what I like more. Graphical/HTMl email or auto select from fields.

P.S. I can change the signature line the same way.

I found out that Mail.app remembers the email addresses that I used last for whatever To: email address. This works great!

Isn't it easier to just define multiple email addresses for each account?

Mail.app -> Preferences -> Accounts -> Edit
then define a coma separated list of your email addresses in the field "Email Address:".

After defining the addresses you can choose for each mail you compose, which email address should be used as "From:" address (not Reply-To).

I haven't tried that, but it may be a way to do it. Although not the best, cause I'll have to add a new adress everytime I use one. That can be a pain. I'd prefer a more automatic way of handling it. Thanks fo rthe suggestion though!

Unless I'm mis-understanding what you are trying to do, all you have to do is setup multiple reply-to addresses in Mail..

Go to Prefs, go to accounts, click edit, go to email address, and add as many email addresses as you want in that field (separated by commas)..

When you write a new message or respond to a message, you can click on the Account pop-up box and select whatever email address you want it to appear coming from.

Cool, it works great! Now I can finally delete all those bogus accounts in my preferences which I only used for outgoing mail.

Thank you!
