Auto lock the screen with Ericsson phone and Bluetooth System
Want a way to lock your screen automatically when you step away from your system? If you have a Sony Ericsson T68i and Bluetooth on your Mac, then here's how:
  1. Download and install the Sony Ericsson Clicker
  2. Once installed, create an action titled "Lock Screen"
  3. Add this to the script section of the item you created:

      tell application "ScreenSaverEngine"
        activate
      end tell
  4. Use this action as your "leave" proximity.
  5. Turn on password protection in the screen saver section of System Prefs.
Now as soon as you are more than 30 or so feet away from your system, the screen saver activates and asks you for a password to clear...

[robg adds: Anyone care to send me an Ericsson so I can test this one? :-)]

For that cool little featue, you don't even need a SE phone.
The proximity sensor works just fine with any bluetooth-enabled phone.

Just the other cool stuff definitely require a Txx.

And here's how to unlock the screen again, when you come back:

try
do shell script "ps axww | grep ScreenSaverEngine | grep -v grep | awk ' { print $1 } ' | xargs kill "
end try

Would this work with just your phone? Or could anywone with a bluetooth enabled phone activate it? I have no experience with bluetooth enabled devices, just curious.

Proximity sensor works with any bluetooth enabled phone

Controlling your mac only works with Ericsson/Sony-Ericsson bluetooth enabled phones

Thanks wisebeck! This is really too cool. I now have my machine go into lock screen mode when I leave the room and unlock when I return.

Does not work for me...

My instance of applescript cannot find the ScreenSaverEngine shared dictionary automatically without browsing to it and selecting it manually. Regardless, I prefer the following. Here is the away action that occurs when my T68i leaves my laptop's proximity.

tell application "itunes"
pause
end tell

set this_data to do shell script "/System/Library/Frameworks/ScreenSaver.framework/Resources/ScreenSaverEngine.app/Contents/MacOS/ScreenSaverEngine"

Any AppleScript
Authored by: nmhansen on Feb 27, '03 01:17:12PM

This program can be used to control ANYTHING that AppleScript can control. There are also menus to control iTunes, PowerPoint and Keynote. From your phone!

This app is truly amazing. The proximity sensor is just the tip of the iceberg.

I posted this story on Macslash:

http://www.macslash.org/article.pl?sid=03/02/24/156244&mode=thread

and as Ben noted, you can still get the T68i for free after rebates on Amazon.

http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B00006IZB0/ref=nosim/macslash-20

Also, T-Mobile will match Amazon's price if you print out the ad and bring it to the store. Pretty sweet deal!

Another Nifty Trick
Authored by: jdurchen on Feb 27, '03 02:30:00PM

Since I play my music from my iPod and my library is on my home
computer I can't use iTunes. I went ahead and changed the scripts to
work with Audion like they do with iTunes(A much better mp3 player
than iTunes btw until they can at lease support mp3pro and let me play
directly from my iPod. I am not holding my breath on the last one).

Also since the screen saver only starts once you leave proximity, and it
only checks this periodically, it can take 30 seconds for this to activate
once I walk away, I wanted a more immediate activation, so I added
additional logic to the pause script such that if it is already paused when
I select it, it will automatically start the screen saver. So two pauses and
it starts.

iTunes: Play
tell application "Audion 3"
if get status of control window 1 is paused then
tell application "Audion 3"
play in control window 1
end tell
end if
end tell

iTunes: Pause
tell application "Audion 3"
if get status of control window 1 is not paused then
tell application "Audion 3"
play in control window 1
end tell
else
tell application "ScreenSaverEngine"
activate
end tell
end if
end tell

iTunes: Previous
tell application "Audion 3"
previous track control window 1
end tell

iTunes: Next
tell application "Audion 3"
next track control window 1
end tell

Why not activate the screen saver - then mess with iTunes, etc..

tell application "ScreenSaverEngine"
activate
end tell

delay 5

tell application "iTunes"
pause
end tell

There is another like program called "Romeo" with an ability to use the tip control on the T68i as a mouse on the Mac box. Pretty cool...

You can find it with a search at versiontracker.com.

set ICQ/ichat status
Authored by: Aendes on Apr 05, '03 02:33:02AM

This hint works great, but now I want to set my status AWAY if I leave my office and maybe AVAILABLE if i come back.

How to do this with an applescript?

Any ideas?

Take a look at the "iChat knows where I am" script from Macworld:

http://www.macworld.com/weblogs/editors/archives/000043.php

Your applescript is probably going to look something like this:

      tell application "iChat"
        set status message to "Away"
      end tell
