Add support for Minolta Dimage 2330 Zoom in 10.2 System
I have seen on different forums that people have problems getting Mac OS X to recognize Minolta's digital camera Dimage 2330 Zoom. This camera is supported by iTunes (according to Apple's compability list) but still, the camera is not recogniced by the system. So what´s wrong? It could be the fact that the camera is supported by the mass storage component and therefore supported by iTunes. However, to use the camera with the system, there should be some information about the product and vendor, and this is not coded anywhere in the system. In other words, the camera would work with OS X if Apple had provided codes for product and vendor. I believe that Apple has decided to let the product vendor provide this data, but in the case with this particular camera, Minolta doesn´t have any support for OS X, only for OS 9.x.

So what do we do now? Apple has support for the camera but has not provided any drivers. Minolta could provide drivers but they won't because it is only supported for older systems. Well, there is a soluton that worked for me. It´s an old one I found a year ago or so but it still works.
  1. Locate the folder /System -> Library -> Image Capture -> Devices. From this folder, copy the Type4Camera application file to folder /Library -> Image Capture -> Devices. You may have to create the folder Devices into the Image Capture folder).

  2. Control-click on the Type4Camera application file and choose Show Package Contents. Open the folder Contents.
  3. Open now the file info.plist and copy the code here to the first position in the file after the first <array> tag:
    <dict>
      <key>product</key>
      <string>0x4003</string>
      <key>vendor</key>
      <string>0x686</string>
    </dict>
  4. Save the file and restart. The system should now recognize the camera Dimage 2330 ZOOM.
The above worked for me and I have done the same in pre-OS X Jaguar systems. The only difference then was that the application file to change should be Type3Camera. So if the above doesn't work, then try Type3Camera application file.

Will this type of tecnique work for TWAIN scanners?
Authored by: jscotta on Feb 25, '03 04:20:59PM

Does anyone know if this technique will work for adding "unsupported" scanners to Image Capture application?

With TWAIN support in Image Capture, I was hopeful that generic TWAIN drivers would drive several of the TWAIN compliant flat-bed scanners that I have since there is little to no hope for the maker to provide specific drivers.

Add support for Minolta Dimage 2300
Authored by: demental on Feb 26, '03 08:46:37AM

i'm working on OS X.2.3
I tried this. I added the lines in the info.plist file for my Minolta 2300, and restarted.
Now iPhoto launches when I connect my camera, but it still says there is no device connected.
It's the same thing for Image Capture.
Should I replace the Type4camera that's in /System/Library/Image Capture/Devices/ by the modified one that's in /Library/Image Capture/Devices/ ?
Maybe I should add the lines for the Dimage 2330 too ?

Can't add support for Minolta Dimage 2300
Authored by: demental on Feb 27, '03 02:53:35AM

Ok, so I tried several things:
- Adding Dimage 2330 Dictionary to info.plist -> no changes
(iPhoto launches but does not recognize my camera)
- replacing the original Type4camera by the modified one -> doesnot work (iPhoto no more launches)
- Doing the stuff with Type3camera -> failed (iPhoto does not launch)

Anybody had success with this tip ?

What would be ...?

What would be the vendor code for a Canon Powershot S230 ... which is unfortunately one of the few Canon's that is not already supported by iPhoto.

Thanks for any help.

Whatever you have it is listed in Apple System Profiler.
Get an ASP report and go to the USB section.
For my 2300 I get :

USB Device:
+----------------------------------------------------------------------+

Product ID : 16385 ($4001)
Vendor ID : 1670
Device Speed : Full
Power (mA) : 100

+----------------------------------------------------------------------+

And verify that your canon is in PTP mode. Recent Canons have two modes : one incompatible and one compatible ;)

The dimage 2300 takes a lot of juice.

Not having seen this tip in time, my solution to this same problem was to go out and buy a USB compactFlash card reader (mine is Lexar - i'm told another in the same price range that works is SanDisk but i didn't try it).

The Card Reader cost 40 CDN (27 US) dollars and requires no extra power from a/c or battery...or wear and tear on the camera. Were it not for how much juice the minolta sucks back i might try this tip out, but without an a/c adapter it is hardly worth it.

Add support for Minolta Dimage 2330 Zoom in 10.2

I have tried to change the code folowing your instructions, but info.plist
won't open giving the message that the dictionary can't be found and
that the program isn't scriptable. Do i forget something that will do the
trick?

Add support for Minolta Dimage 2330 Zoom in 10.2
Authored by: peterjdean on Dec 02, '06 02:51:05PM

Following on with the previous instruction for 10.2 but for 10.4,

Under 10.4.8 (tested using iPhoto v6.0.5 on an Intel iMac), I needed to modify the type3 camera support by adding (as the last entry under the Olympus) the following to the DeviceInfo.plist file found under Resources.

<dict>
<key>Product Identification</key>
<string>MINOLTA DIMAGE 2330 ZOOM</string>
<key>idProduct</key>
<string>0x4003</string>
<key>idVendor</key>
<string>0x0686</string>
</dict>
