Welcome to the new macosxhints.com Site News
Welcome to the new and improved (I hope) macosxhints.com! We're now running on Geeklog version 1.3.7, and there are a few nice new features:
  • Story submission mode includes a

tag pair that will leave all characters (including ) alone. Please use this when submitting code!
  • A greatly improved links page with paging and organization by category.
  • A nicely improved search engine, with much more readable results ... and there will be more improvements in the near future.
  • Blocks on one side only. For now, they're on the right, though that may change in the near future based on some expected features in a minor Geeklog upgrade.
  • There's a new "Site Activity" feature in the What's New box that will show you everything that was posted to the site on any given day. You can easily choose any of the last seven days, or search on any day in the site's history.
  • Topics are now in a pop-up box on the right, just below the What's New boxes. There are two new topics (Browsers and OS X Server) to pick from, and I'll be migrating some historical hints into those categories in the near future.
  • Finally, registered users (the free registration, not the subscription) will be able to pick from one of three themes, as shown here:

There are actually two versions of the Color theme (one with rollovers, one without), so technically there are four themes to pick from. Registered users can also post commets, set comment display preferences, and other things...
I'm sure I've missed some things, and I'm sure many of you will have comments. So if you notice a problem, or something that doesn't make sense, something you like, or something you don't, please drop a line to feedback@macosxhints.com and let me know what's on your mind. Please include a URL to the particular page you're commenting on to make it easier for me to see what you're seeing.

Sorry it took so long this weekend, but as with most web projects, actual time estimates always seem to be off by a factor of two or three...

A kind reader re-wrote the whole RDF engine in Geeklog; I'm in test mode with it right now...

Happy to test it with Radio Userland and NetNewsWire Pro. :)

Need another tester?
Authored by: sardu_mac on Feb 17, '03 12:28:06AM

I didn't re-write the whole thing, its like 1 function :-)

For potential testers: Radio, NetNewsWire, and AmphetaDesk have tested the new RSS code to death (maybe Rob wants testers for his customized feed here, I dunno). I am using Dave Winer's RSS 2.0 spec for the feed, for you Radio fans out there.

PS. Rob:
Since Google's recent purchase of Blogger is going to balloon this format, I should let you know I've got 'blogger web services' and MoveableType-style TrackBack pings' working ~80% in geeklog now too. :-)

You did a wonderful job, I like the color theme :) What is the difference beteen Color lines and Color effects?

Lines vs. Effects
Authored by: robg on Feb 16, '03 09:36:42PM

Lines has all links underlined all the time; Effects uses only color to distinguish links until you roll over them, at which time they underline...

Hey Rob:

I just wanted to say thanks for all the work you've put into this site. I don't know who else (if anyone) helps but my appreciation to them as well. While there will always be things that your users want changed, we all appreciate this excellent resource.

Here's to 3000 more hints, and beyond!

Well, it's different than before. The only thing I noticed was the lack of the info on the left side of the page. I just feel the front page just looks unbalanced to me.

Sorry, but I had to laugh when I read

"* Story submission mode includes a

tag pair that will leave all characters (including ) alone. Please use this when submitting code!"

I'm guessing that there's meant to be a backslash in those brackets. Si?

Congratulations on getting the new beast up and running,
Paul (long time sufferer of backslash torture on macosxhints)

Heh ...
Authored by: robg on Feb 17, '03 12:47:39AM

I wasn't using it, as I wanted it inline, which requires the 'tt' tag. Sigh. Still not perfect, but much better for regular (non-inline) code snippets...

BTW, thanks for noticing -- I fixed it...I think ;-).

Staying logged in
Authored by: echo on Feb 17, '03 02:30:45AM

Great job, Rob. I really appreciate what you've done with the site!

BTW, I wasn't staying logged in (Safari) until I deleted my cookies with the older dates, but was able to keep the ones I just created. Now all seems well.

font size
Authored by: morebrackeen on Feb 17, '03 03:05:07AM

very nice, but it looks like the style sheet gets interpreted a bit differently on windows.
*squint* the font size is very small on ie for windows. seems ok on safari and ie for mac.

I thought I tested it with IE on Windows at the default settings and it looked OK ... I'll take another look at it.

Who is responsible for this Dutch localization? Too many silly Dutch translations and grammatical blunders, too many loose words and capital letters? it's awful. MacOSXhints deserves better!

Sorry, it's part of the standard Geeklog installation. I'm sure the team would welcome an improved Dutch translation file -- you can find them on the #Geeklog channel on IRC (irc.freenode.net), or at the website (www.geeklog.net, just submit a story).

Forums in same window?
Authored by: UltraNurd on Feb 17, '03 09:22:09AM

The forums link now defaults to opening a new window with the forums page in it... any chance you'd considering changing this behavior back to the way it was?

Otherwise the new site is great! I love the new color theme. I also like that the main content is on the left.

Just finally got a chance to go through the new site, GREAT JOB.

BTW: Rob, I just got a mailing from orielly about your forth coming book.
Three questions:

When is it due out?

Will it be available for purchase here?

Does a years worth of site hints come included, or will i have to beg my wife for another 10 bucks for that? ;)

"When is it due out?"

Hmm ... "when it's done?" Seriously, I haven't seen a date yet. It's in edit now, though, so it shouldn't be too long.

"Will it be available for purchase here?"

I'll put up a link of some sort, I'm sure, through an Amazon affiliate or something.

"Does a years worth of site hints come included, or will i have to beg my wife for another 10 bucks for that? ;)"

I personally view them as two separate projects, as they both require(d) large amounts of my time, but I will let your conscience (and your budget!) be your guide, and I'll completely understand if it's one or the other but not both :-).

Geeklog'ers greatful!
Authored by: tony_bibbs on Feb 17, '03 12:20:07PM
I am one of the Geeklog developers. Little do you all know, that despite I am a hard-headed RedHat user, I watch this site regularly because it is one of the biggest Geeklog installations in existence. As you might expect, a lot of our feedback, bug reports and feature enchancement come from Rob which I can be sure many come from all of you. So while Rob does deserve a lot of kudos for the hard work he has put in, so do all of you.

Hey rob,

I have the classic color theme on (I happen to like it more, easier to read) and the background of the comments is the same as the background of the page; therefore it's a bit hard to read. On the previous theme the background of hte commetns was of a lighter blue.

Any chance you can change it? This is in safari btw.

New layout looks great, thanks for the hard work!

One question though, is there a way to get hints to use up the full width of my browser window? I've selected 'No boxes' in my Display Preferences, which got rid of all the news boxes on the right, but 'User Control Panel' remains, with a lot of unused whitespace below it. Obviously the Control Panel has to come up somewhere, is there any way to move it to the top, bottom or something out of the way?
