A keyboard shortcut to launch System Prefs - Displays System
Option+F14 or Option+F15 will launch System Preferences and put you into the Displays section, while Option+Lower Volume or Raise Volume or Mute will also launch System Preferences and put you into the Sound section.

[Editor's note: The sound shortcut had been previously mentioned here, but I don't think the same is true for the shortcut for the System Preferences - Display panel. This hint points out that F14/F15 by themselves will control brightness on some (all?) Apple LCD panels.]

Power Book Version

On my 15" PowerBook, I use Option and F1 or F2 to open Display Preferences, and Option F3-F5 for sound. I also can use Command F1 or F2 to redetect displays instead of using the menu or putting the system to sleep and waking up again.

LaunchBar can do all of this and more, and you won't have to memorize the specific shortcuts.

I always use the brightness button on the monitor. Its the quickest way I know of. I guess you have to have a LCD monitor that has this button. I use the power button on the monitor to put the system to sleep.

On my PowerMac G4 with a 21" CRT, F14 and F15 control contrast (not brightness).
