Use Stickies to preview fonts

I discovered that most graphics programs labor through the selection of fonts, and never allow the testing of several fonts without creating another RAM-heavy document. So I have found the most processor-light way to view several fonts in the sizes and colors I want to consider for a layout is with the Stickies application!

Create as many Stickies notes as there are fonts you want to see; they are persistent on the desktop until you hide them. Type the text of choice, bring up the font panel in Stickies, and view as many identical notes with different text as you've got space on the desktop for!

This works for me because I like to view the fonts near the document I want to use them in, before actually cutting and pasting in the Photoshop layer or email. It is easier to choose when you can see the font faces at the same time.

[Editor's note: Yes you can use the Preview area of the Fonts panel to preview one font at a time, but this is a simple method of having a few font face examples visible (at the same time) with exactly the text you'd like to see at the sizes you'd like to use.]
