Use QuickTime Broadcaster to stream FireWire video

It's been out for a while, but QuickTime Broadcaster (free from Apple) works on MacOS X (Server and Client), and can turn your FireWire DV Camera into a streaming webcam, with a MPEG-4 video stream. It can be used with QuickTime Streaming Server (which is also free and works on both varieties of OS X) to create multiple streams, or by itself to create a single stream.

Be sure you have the upstream bandwidth to serve your movie stream, and that your intended client has the downstream bandwidth to view the movies. There are some easy-to use presets for modem, DSL, and LAN.

This is great for letting Grandma see the grandkids in action without having to create a movie first.

[Editor's note: Yes, this isn't really a hint as much as it's a pointer to an application ... but you may not be aware that it's available (and free, no less!), so I thought it was worth a mention.]
