Mail.app replaces viewed message with reply form Apps
Not really a tip, more an example of the thoroughness of the UI design.

If you have a mail message open to read (as distinct from looking at it in the preview pane) and you choose reply, the original message window goes away and is replaced by the reply message window.

Unlike for example, Eudora, where another window is created alongside the existing one(s).

[Editor's note: I use the preview pane so extensively, I'd never noticed this as I hardly ever double-click a window. I think it's a nice touch, though it might be a bit disconcerting at first, as I certainly didn't ask the current window to go away -- what if I change my mind about replying and want to see the message again?]

You can also set what information from the original message is included in your reply. I particulary like the Preferences: Composing setting "Include selected text, if any, otherwise include all". Then if you select just what text you want to reply to in the original message, even in the message preview window, and choose reply, the message reply form will include only that text you selected.

I dislike this feature

Personally, I prefer the Eudora method. It allows me to look at one window while typing into the other. I haven't found a preference for it, though.

Outlook does the same thing, and it makes me grumpy there too.

The control over how much to import as quoted are slick -- exactly correct.

Eudora Convert
Authored by: bluehz on Feb 10, '03 04:56:45PM
After using Eudora for 15 years - I finally decided to take the plunge and try and use Mail.app. been using about a week though - surviving on a steady diet of tips like this to get me up to speed. I have searched everywhere for a nice single-location reference of tips and keyboard shortcuts for Mail.app to digest. But have yet to find anything like that. Does anyone know a good resource for Mail.app tips, keyboard shortcuts, etc?

Also - posted this in forums and got NO response. Hoping this may give more exposure - its related to my Mail.app conversion...

Does anyone know if there are keyboard equivalents for the functions in the Apple Spellchecker interface? I can't seem to find them and its driving me crazy having to stop typing and click the IGNORE, CORRECT, LEARN, etc buttons each time.

How about if you don't use the spellchecker? Have it check spelling as you type, then if a word gets underlined all you have to do is control click it for suggestions on the propper spelling to pop up.

Whenever I reply, it puts my signature BELOW the quoted message. Thats no good. Any way to fix this? (I hate having to cut and paste it up every time)
