Using a camera as a file transfer device

I have an iMac and an iBook, but a slow home connection making large downloads (e.g. OS X updates) frustrating. But the nearby university library has fat pipes with Ethernet jacks for one's portables as well as Windows 2000 (newer Dells) and OS 9 iMacs in the lab.

After hauling in the iBook to get large files via a jack, it occurred to me that I could probably Netscape-download to my digital camera (Olympus C4000, 128 meg memory card), USB-ed into a lab box. This worked, either by saving the download directly to the camera or by saving to the desktop followed by a drag-copy to the camera. Both OS's detected and recognized the camera immediately, treating it as a no-name device. OS X put it on the desktop, Windows under MyComputer.

I guess I shouldn't be surprised but I am, certainly by the simplicity.
