Split long tracks for burning to multiple CDs Apps
I recently bought some audio books from audlble.com for a roadtrip to vegas, but quickly realized that the 3 hour book wouldn't fit on a single CD, and there isn't any software to break up an audible file (.aa) into smaller pieces. It turns out iTunes has built in track 'clipping' capability.

The trick is to use the File -> Get Info -> Options -> Start Time and End Time values to specify what section of the track is played, or in this case, burned.

This is also great when making a mix CD with a song that has 10 minutes of silence in it. It's easy to trim the silence without having to use another program to chop up the file.

10 minutes of silence?

I'm just curious about a song with 10 minutes of silence in it. And about the fact that you want to cut it.

Do explain! :)

10 minutes of silence?

It's not that uncommon. When CD's have special "bonus tracks" they will sometimes put 5 minutes of silence at the end of the last "real" track to hide the bonus track.

AppleScript Studio
Authored by: tbrown on Feb 03, '03 04:03:00PM

I had a much longer track to do the same thing with.

I wrote a small Applescript studio app where I put in the number of the CD that I was burning and it set the start/stop time. Then I'd flip over to itunes, insert the CD and click burn.

I put a 1 minute overlap on each CD, I didn't worry about trying to detect the chapter breaks.

I probably spent more time coding the app than spending some time w/ a calculator, but it was much more fun to write the application.

I'd post the code but it's really a quick hack (and shows it). But if anyone really cares, I'll post it.

It's the difference between a LP and an EP

You can see a lot of records with that sort of scheme because any recording with less than 30 or 32 minutes (can't remember the correct value) is classified as an EP and not as a LP.
Record labels have a huge list of reasons why an LP is better than an EP, I'm not getting into =)

So, there's the music industry for you ;)

Split long tracks for burning to multiple CDs

I've been burning audio books to CD for about 6 months (so I can listen to them in my car) using the Get Info technique.

I just noticed today that iTunes 4 automatically splits long files into multiple CDs. Don't do anything special, make a playlist with one audio book, and click burn. iTunes tells you that the audio is too long to fit on one CD, do you want to go ahead and burn to multiple CDs. Say yes and it will ask for one CD after another until the entire file is burned.

Very nice!

What if I have a single track that will fit on my mp3 player, but want it to have track or index marks at 1 or 5 minute intervals so that when I stop and come back, I don't have to fast forward so much?

In the past, I have used mpgtx to split the file before importing, but some mp3s aren't recognized by mpgtx and I can't split them.

Chris,

I tried this with Panther (10.3.1) and iTunes 4.1 and the CD would burn track 1 the right length and then get hungup and never finish the rest of the CD. What OS are you using?

Got some audio books from the Apple Music store I would love to listen to in the car.
