G3/500 iBooks and Keynote can cause a system crash Apps
I know this isn't a typical hint, but the potential for embarrassment in front of large groups of people with this bug is really high, so knowing this could be very helpful ...

On the 500 MHz iBook, Keynote has what is now a known problem. It crashes the operating system reproducibly during a presentation under OS X 10.2.3. Apple's Knowledge Base covers the issue (with no real resolution) in Article 61858.

Apparently downgrading to 10.2.2 should solve the problem until the bug is fixed, but I haven't tried that yet.

[Editor's note: Normally we don't consider KBase articles as fodder for hints, but this one is clearly worth noting. I was bitten by it a couple of times myself on our G3/500 iBook (thankfully never while presenting), and it is a bad crash -- the entire OS locks up tight, which means you can't really smoothly relaunch the app and pretend nothing happened!]

I guess there aren't many people who bought the 600 MHz iBook with the ATI Rage video card, because I never see it mentioned along with the 500 MHz iBook. Anyhow, I have this one, and Keynote causes the crashes and lockups on it as well.

ATI again

Apparently this is an issue with ATI chips. This isn't the first time major system issues have traced back to ATI, there was also a reproducible system lockup on Blue G3 Towers which traced back to bad ATI drivers. Hopefully this will be fixed in 10.2.4.

A couple months after I bought it (14" 600mHz), they bumped it up to 16MB VRAM...Doh!

Oh...I should mention the fact that I also have used Keynote and suffered total system lock-ups...DURING real presentations.

Anyway, shame on Apple for not testing on 1 year old hardware. Back to PowerPoint.

yup... sadly i have experienced this as well, on my iBook 500 with 384MB RAM..

i was showing my PC buddies the new keynote, and how fast i could make a super-slick presentation... and just as they were going "wow... i should buy a..." poof!... the iBook locked up. actually .. the warning was kinda cool... it dimmed the screen and told me to restart in like 4 languages...

"eh... it'l will be fixed by next month" i told them... and preceded to make fun of the fact that they still wait for some patched to thier windows machines...
