Read the FreeBSD handbook for OS X UNIX info UNIX
I would like to recommend the FreeBSD handbook to all those interested in the Unix side of OS X and particularly to users of X11. The latest version of this document is always available from the FreeBSD web site. It may also be downloaded in a variety of formats and compression options from the FreeBSD FTP server or one of the numerous mirror sites.

Don't forget that in spite of the similarities between Fink and Linux, OS X in general, the file system, and even the porting methods for Fink have more in common with BSD than with Linux.

I use the HTML version which may be downloaded in a tar.gz format (1200K that untars into a 3.5MB file). It's good reading, believe me. Nearly all the Unix / Linux / BSD users I know use it from time to time to find commands, to get an overview of system structure and to find helpful info that applies to all Unix-type systems. The idea for posting this "hint" came to me while reading an article by the famous "Proclus" of GNU/Darwin fame in which he writes of Apple's relation to Open Source, Darwin, and cooperation in general with the Open Source Community. He also mentions the FreeBSD ports system (see brief description below) which I personally use to whip up an app that I need for X11 from time to time when I'm feeling brave. From the kur5hin article:
The FreeBSD ports system was used to build over 15,000 software packages for Darwin and Mac OS X users. The ports system is a natural fit with Darwin and Mac OS X, because it orginates from the FreeBSD project. Standards compliance is very high in the ports system, which means that most of the packages build with little or no modification, and users get a familiar Unix-style installation.
[Editor's note: I've spent some (not nearly enough) time with the handbook, and it is indeed a very useful reference.]
