The new Audio Midi Setup application in OS X is very promising, and it actually works. But one of the first things seasoned Mac musicians will observe is that (from Apple Knowledge Base article number 106993):
I did a little check in the folder structures in Library, and soon figured out how to at least add device icons. I am trying to do some more research in order to solve more of the puzzle.
Anyway ... the only midi device icons available at the moment are in a set caled "Generic." For all those synth and keyboard geeks out there who have midi-retrofitted minimoogs or midi-interfaced modulars or DIY synths like the PAIA etc., and want to see really cool icons of these in the Midi setup window, you can follow the steps described in this little article I wrote.
If you create a new MIDI device in Audio MIDI Setup and double-click the device icon, the Manufacturer and Model menus are empty.Apple states in the article that "This is normal behavior. In a future release, Apple may populate these menus with common manufacturer names and models. You can still enter those names yourself when creating new devices."
