Really ... the new site is coming soon! Site News
I realize this is "old news," but progress on the new site has been very good since the completion of the book project. I currently have the site up and running on my machine, using the latest Geeklog release (after scrapping the work I had done once, as it was too hard to support). I'll spend some time this weekend on finishing up some of the ancillary details and completing work on the other themes (yes, themes -- four or five to choose from) ... but we should be going live sometime in the next week or two at the absolute latest.

As a bit of a preview, one of the nice new features is a greatly improved search engine, courtesy of the team at Macfixit (who added the functionality to Geeklog). Here's a little sample of what you'll soon be able to do ... click here for a larger preview.

The new search engine allows searching on phrases, all words, or any words (finally!), as well as offering highlighting of the search terms in both the results window (shown here) and when displaying the source article.

It's been a much tougher project than I had expected, but we're finally nearing the finish line -- thanks for hanging in there while this kept getting pushed to the back of the priority list.

Have a great weekend, everyone!

Perhaps -- but as of now, the RDF in GL 1.3.7 is the same as in the version of GL we're running now. Creating an RDF file is way beyond my skill set, so if someone wants to volunteer to tackle the project (ie changing the RDF creation routine, insuring that the new file conforms to the RDF spec, working with the Geeklog team to include the changes in the core distribution), then we'll have a new and improved RDF. If not, we're stuck with what's there until the Geeklog team gets around to making changes.

Sorry, but that's the realities of the situation given limited time, skill, and financial resources.

If anyone's interested in looking at it, let me know and we'll see if we can't work something out.

Have you modified the code at all or will a patch against the 1.3.7sr1 release work on the macosxhints?

I've modified lib-common somewhat, but haven't touched the RDF specific sections at all -- so I can work with a patch :-).

When you'll be adding a favicon for Safari?

It's supposed to be showing up now; I must have it in either the wrong format or the wrong location. I'll make sure it shows.

If you post it in another format, one of us can convert it.

haha lack of advertising rules.. we do appreciate it, even if it doesn't seem that way. :)

But really, the favicon isn't showing up in chimera or safari.. I can convert an image for you to a .ico file.. although i'm sure you can too, i would use graphicconverter..

I had some problems with mine for a while, until I took all references to it out and just put it in my www root. It seems to be picked up by everything now.. hope that helps.

Well, it looks to me like you've got the favicon fixed. I have a nice "X" like in the title banner at the top of every page.

How about publishing the search hack for the rest of the GL community to use? I think the current search capabilities of GL are somewhat lacking. Perhaps you should even submit it for inclusion in a future version in the 1.3.x branch (surely GL2 will support excellent search capabilties).

I published my search hack to geeklog.net the day I finished it. But the above modification is not a hack, it's a good rewrite of the search engine by Marc of MacFixIt. Even better, he has already contributed the code back to the Geeklog source, and it's avaialable via CVS.

I've got it installed and running on my 1.3.7 release, and it works well. There's still a lack of "full text" searching due to MySQL (ie it can't tell that a search for "event" shouldn't also find "prevent"), but that should be addressed by newer versions of MySQL and Geeklog (in the future).

Short of that restriction, the new engine is MUCH nicer than the old!
