OpenOffice and Apple's X11 beta UNIX
To be able to double-click on OpenOffice.org documents, add the following link allowing the delivered start application to work with Apple's X11 application:
ln -s /Applications/X11.app /Applications/XDarwin.app
You can also add the OpenOffice Programs to the X11.app Applications Menu by clicking on Applications -> Customize -> Add Item. Fill in the desired name, for example OpenOffice, and in the Command part, enter:
/Applications/OpenOffice.org/program/soffice
You can also put in the different applications of OpenOffice.org, like swriter, sdraw, scalc and so on.

Have fun with the free and open Office :-)

OOo Final Beta
Authored by: sms on Jan 12, '03 06:39:37AM
does not work with this hint because the "Start OpenOffice.org" application has problems with X11.app But as you only added a link you can easily remove it to use Openoffice with XDarwin again, or wait until an upgrade to "Start OpenOffice.org" is available hopefully making my hint obsolety anyways. Adding the Applications to X11.app for launching does also work with final beta. (when I posted the hint I was using the beta from autumn 2002)

OOo Final Beta

Worked fine for me. First time I launched Start OpenOffice, it asked me to locate my preferred X11 implementation, I chose Apple's beta X11 and that was that.

Not the fastest launching thing on my drive, but it does seem to work just fine.

After installing ooo final beta, I got it to run eventually by opening X11.app, then in the xterm window, I did

cd /Applications/OpenOffice.org1.0.1/program
./soffice

It ran quite well. I don't know if it helps, but I did try to double-click open "Start OpenOffice.org.app" and selected X11.app as my window manager, but it never worked. That's when I decided just to run "soffice" directly. Seems to work great!

But I do think that Apple's X11.app will change EVERYTHING. quartz-wm is FANTASTIC. I think that everything fink/openoffice/etc will be reconfigured to work seemlessly with X11.app very soon now.

I got it to work from the Applications menu by going to Customize --> Add --> then typing in a name, like OpenOffice, then adding the path...

cd /Applications/OpenOffice.org1.0.1/program/; ./soffice

Thanks for the ./soffice tip

Nice.
Thanks so very much for the tip, works great. No one else seemed to be able to answer this.

But on Apple's X11 final beta, the text boxes, buttons, and the paragragh styles selection box look alot lot like windows. This is freaking me out- cant stand the look! I know its great software, but.....

Is this normal? a bug maybe? Just checking.....

Thanks again,
Sean

OpenOffice appears to use its own widget set for drawing windows and its misc. elements. It looks like that under Linux, too. It is very unfortunate for all OpenOffice lovers that such an ugly appearance was selected, especially since there are so many other, nice looking windowing designs. And I'm not referring to XP.

That said, you can at least change the way the program appears a little bit.
1) Click on the "Tools" menu and select "Options..."
2) Under the "OpenOffice.org" tree, click on "View"
3) Choose a more appealing option under the "Look & Feel" menu

Enjoy a bit more.
