Click on the insect in the upper right hand corner of Safari- that will reach the right folks.

Note: is it just me or does that insect remind anyone else of the frowny face in iCab?

No Tabbed Browsing?
Authored by: vgz on Jan 07, '03 11:00:56PM
I just sent the following:

Please add the following to Safari: tabbed browsing (look at Chimera for this though I would like to see some sort of brushed metal bars that stretch to fill all available space with a division line between them (two tabs would take up the width of the window with the division in the middle) that had a close button on them); forms auto-fill using the Address Book database's Me card; password management ala Chimera(remember any password in the keychain); ability to customize the toolbar and hide it with the standard button in the upper corner of the window; import bookmarks (from Chimera/Mozilla for example); tabmarks (from Chimera: bookmarks that contain several sites and open them all in a group of tabs.); favicons on the bookmark bar; preference to set the minimum font size (I'm on a 17" Studio Display @ 1600x1200 resolution and it can be difficult to read some sites that set small fonts); option to block specific cookies in the cookie manager; the ability to block ad banners or other images (see Omniweb); and finally I would like to see a drawer for bookmarks, search results, and history. For a Public Beta Safari is great. Its very fast and stable. This may seem like a long list but I just want this to be the best browser it can be.

You can quote and agree with me on the features or change it as you see fit. Maybe if enough people request these they will be added.

Safari and FTP
Authored by: macmath on Jan 07, '03 03:41:07PM

Downloads are fast too! I downloaded the X11 beta with Safari from my office at an university and it came in at an incredible 426 Kb/sec. So I turned around and downloaded it with Mozilla 1.2 and it came in at 93 Kb/sec. I did the same with X11 SDK and the speeds were 435 Kb/sec with Safari and 127 Kb/sec with Mozilla. I then went to VersionTracker and downloaded two files at random: File1 (AIM) 439 Kb/sec with Safari and 343 Kb/sec with Mozilla. File2 (ezemotion) 131 Kb/sec with Safari and 118 Kb/sec with Mozilla.

Also, if you use ftp in Safari, it will mount the site on your desktop just as if you were using the menubar 'Go:Connect to Server...' in the finder.

ftp://ftp.barebones.com gives you ftp.barebones.com mounted in the Finder.

802.11a or b?
Authored by: at_sym on Jan 07, '03 02:46:55PM

You mention that it\'s \"802.11a compatible.\" Do you mean 802.11b (AirPort), or did they add 802.11a support, too? There\'s no mention of it on Apple\'s site.

Airport Extreme
Authored by: mclayville on Jan 07, '03 02:50:15PM

is NOT compatible with 802.11a, it IS compatible with 802.11b (i.e. Airport or Wi-Fi). The 802.11a standard specifies a different transmission frequency (5 Ghz) and different modulation schemes. Both 802.11b and 802.11g operate on the same frequency (2.4 Ghz) and that is why they can be compatible.

Airport Extreme
Authored by: Stephan on Jan 07, '03 03:13:17PM

Buuu huuu huuu...

...there seems to be no way to upgrade an existing PowerBook from Airport to Airport Extreme. They use MiniPCI-Cards instead of the old PCMCIA card format. And they didn't increase the security options. And you only get the full speed if there are only Airport Extreme clients in the network - the speed drops back to 11MBit when older clients are present for compatibility reasons.

I really don't understand the decision to abandon the installed Airport user base - it's no problem to pack the 54MBit punch in a PCMCIA card (Cisco does it with 802.11a) and the bus is fast enough. Standard is a PCMCIA card for clients and a MiniPCI card for the basestation...

Let's hope some other manufacturer jumps in and provides the cards and the drivers - after all the new basestation is quite a bargain.

Stephan

Yeah, I was a little ticked that my iBook that does not have AirPort installed and is less than two months old cannot use AirPort Extreme. (I was also a little ticked that I couldn't even say 'damn' on an Apple Discussions board.)

well - it seems there is Airport Extreme for older PowerBooks...

In the German Apple-Onlinestore, http://store.apple.com/Apple/WebObjects/germanstore/ , in the Airport section (called "Drahtlos" in german, just where the "Wireless" is in the US Apple-Onlinestore) somewhere near the bottom of the page is a new item:

a Belkin 54g 802.11g PCMCIA cardbus card für EUR 99,- (US$103,-)

Looks nice!

X11 not quite ready for primetime?
Authored by: notmatt on Jan 07, '03 03:50:08PM

Installed without a problem, but I'm having trouble using X apps over an ssh connection, which Orosborosx and XDarwin have never had trouble with.

Other issues:
* Apparently doesn't always obey window positioning: gimp windows open on top of each other.
* Always opens an xterm. I can't figure out why, and I can't find how to stop it.
* the xterm doesn't seem to parse .login (though this may be the *correct* behaviour - Unix arcana sometimes confounds me)
* absolutely no help file that I could find.

In case anyone has any bright ideas, this is the error I get when I try to use remote X applications:
Xlib: connection to "localhost:17.0" refused by server
Xlib: Invalid MIT-MAGIC-COOKIE-1 key

On the plus side, it DOES appear to do things faster than XDarwin.

I think you can kill the xterm and have it auto launch other apps in the "Applications" menu. Without help, I'm just guessing. And I don't want to kill it just yet, but give that a try.

the xterm behavior is built-in to the window server, and the launch arguments for the window server are built into the binary for X11.app.

How's that for prime time? :P

X11 not quite ready for primetime?
Authored by: jg on Jan 07, '03 07:43:21PM

Did you have XDarwin installed before? If not, the Apple X11 installation must have added a generic xinitrc. Navigate to "/etc/X11/xinit" and edit xinitrc with your prefered editor (vi, emacs, pico) to delete any startup items from there. You should see something like "exec xterm &" or "xterm &" (no quotes).

If you ever installed an X Server before, then you might have a personal xinitrc on your home folder. It is a hidden file, I mean, it starts with a dot, and is called .xinitrc.

Regarding help files, all the X manpages should have been installed, but might not be on your man path. Try the command man X, but if it does not work, and if you use a sensible shell (zsh, bash), at the command prompt type export MANPATH=$MANPATH:/usr/X11R6/man. In case you use the tcsh or csh then the command is: setenv MANPATH ${MANPATH}':/usr/X11R6/man'.

Safari is SMART!
Authored by: clmensch on Jan 07, '03 10:41:21PM
OK first of all, when I first ran Safari, the default home page was set to my personal home page. I'm not talking about my .mac home page...I'm talking about my personal domain (which is my lastname.com). I swear to God I do not have this set as my home page on any browser installed on my computer. Somehow it just knew to set it this way.

The other Safari smarts I noticed is that when you mouse over a link that opens a new windows (in this case, via a "target=_blank" attribute of an href tag), the taskbar text says "Opens 'http://xxxxxxxx' in a new window". Nice touch.

Safari
Authored by: bhippel on Jan 08, '03 05:15:18AM

Not bad at all. I'm not sure about the comment regarding being faster than Chimera. I was glad to hear that a future version will implement tabbed browsing...that's the first thing I looked for. It's sleek, and I like the new approach to bookmarks...makes them easier to manage than the IE (crappy) list. Given it's standards support, and integration with Address Book, etc...I am looking forward to this becoming my browser of choice. However, I cannot ignore how quick Gecko-based browsers are, and Chimera .6 is a great piece of software! One thing I'd like to see...auto-fill of passwords, like the Gecko family (Mozilla, Chimera, Netscape 7) give me. Then we'll be on track! :-)

Airport Extreme
Authored by: glacierlily on Jan 21, '10 01:36:55PM

Since replacing my Linksys Router with the Airport Extreme, my Dell PC still thinks my internet connection is through the Linksys (which it obviously ISN'T). I recently just got my wired PC to recognize the printer I had connected to the USB on the AE. What I really want to do is use a USB hub from the back of the AE to hook up my external hard drive AND my printer, but that didn't work when I tried it. What do I need to do in order for my PC to recognize that the AE is now the network connection? I've already talked to the Apple people, and they said to find a PC geek - anyone out there that can help would be appreciated.
