For me, it fixed a completely different problem - namely that my menu extras had suddenly stopped functioning.
Try this if you have really weird, seemingly unexplained issues with OS X after upgrading to 10.2.3.

I'm not quite sure what the magic bullet is, but a bunch of users on the macfixit.com OS X forum noted that reinstalling the 10.2.3 Combo Update fixes various problems, in their case many of the CD-RW issues.

re-installing 10.2.3 after ATI retail upgrade
I installed the ATI october 2002 driver upgrade package after upgrading OS X to 10.2.3. Subsequently, all OpenGL display stuff was broken - I got frame rates less than 1 fps with tux racer on a Radeon 8500 ! After a few minutes of despair, I decided to undo the ATI upgrade by re-installing 10.2.3, because I knew that it had an OpenGL upgrade, too. To my great relief, the display was back to normal.
10.2.3 Caveat
I found that applying the 10.2.3 Combo update to a non-startup partition from another partition rendered the former un-bootable. That is, the update should evidently be installed only on your current startup volume. I wound up having to reinstall 10 -> 10.2 -> 10.2.3 Combo, which seems to be a good idea anyway for general system integrity. |
