I recently purchased an Epson Stylus Photo 820 - a printer that boasts 6-color and BorderFree Printing technologies. BorderFree Printing allows the printer to not use margins and utilize the entire sheet of paper - very handy when printing large, high-quality photographs. However, when I upgraded to OS X, I lost the ability to utilize BFP (along with some other high-end printing features), and I have had to use Classic for BorderFree prints.
After doing some forum-searching/posting, I found a open-source program called Gimp-Print that includes many high-quality drivers for about 300 printers (thanks to JBL on the AppleInsider forums for the tip). After an easy (and well-documented) installation and setup, I printed an 8.5" x 11" poster with no margins from Photoshop 7 in OS X 10.2.2. Anybody who misses the lost features for their Epson, Canon, or HP (and many other brands) printer should be sure to check out Gimp-Print. For those of you who haven't upgraded to Jaguar: Gimp-Print requries MacOS X 10.2 or higher to run.
[Editor's note: Although a few hints have mentioned using Gimp-Print to work around certain problems, or to print to networked printers, etc., I was surprised to see we hadn't previously just mentioned the program as a good way to gain access to lost printer features. If you want to know more about the package before you install it, check out the very complete OS X FAQ page on their website.]
