Troubleshooting a slow application loading problem System
Since upgrading to Jaguar a number of months ago my system has been plagued with numerous problems that, due to some shoddy troubleshooting, have taken till now to solve. The first problem I noticed was that applications were taking between three and five times as long to load as they had under 10.1.5. After extensive (and inefficient) troubleshooting I found that the preference file for FruitMenu was causing the problem. After deleting this file:
~/Library/Preferences/com.unsanity.fruitmenu.plist
launch times returned to their pre-Jaguar times. I have no idea why this file was causing this problem but suspect that it probably has a great deal to do with the fact that when I installed 10.2 I used the import existing users option; i.e. it was the preference file from my 10.1.5 installation.

A further problem I've experienced is what appeared to be a relatively slow memory leak within numerous applications. Over time a number of applications (e.g. QuicKeys, @-time, and various others) would take up progressively more and more RAM until my system would begin to pageout. QuicKeys Background Engine, for example, would increase the amount of RAM it was using from around 15Mb to approaching 100Mb.

After weeks of trying to solve this one (including fsck –y, repairing privileges, Drive 10 etc) I decided, on the basis that FruitMenu had previously caused problems, to remove all my Unsanity haxies (FruitMenu, Xounds, WindowShade, the Application Enhancer, the Menu Items Enabler, and Cee Pee You). After removing them all and their associated preference files (any file starting with ‘com.unsanity'), my memory problems were resolved. At this point I decided to reinstall the haxies one at a time to see if I could pinpoint the problem. To cut a long story short I have now reinstalled all of them and don't have the memory leak. Again, I can only assume this has something to do with the preference files, and again I have no idea what.

I guess it's possible that this problem was specific to my setup in some way but it seems like too much of a coincidence that Unsanity's preference files were implicated in both these problems. In other words, for those of you who i) imported your user folder when you installed 10.2, and ii) have experienced either of these problems (or possibly others), it might be worth completely uninstalling (and reinstalling) your various Unsanity haxies.

Corrupt .plists
Authored by: bester on Dec 18, '02 09:32:55AM

Upgrading to Jaguar seems to corrupt a bunch of the preference files. I don't have a list of all of them, but you\'ll definitely want to backup com.apple.finder.plist and com.apple.systempreferences.plist before the upgrade.

Replacing the Jaguar-corrupted files with their old versions fixes the problem, and leaves you with your personalisations intact.

Did you update your haxies to the latest versions so they would run reliably under Jaguar?

Yes I did. That's one of the things that made this doubly irritating. I waited until everything I needed was compatible with 10.2 then upgraded. As I said in my original message, I can only assume that the pref files for the previous versions of the haxies were incompatible (in some way or another) with my 10.2 installation.

Ahhhh!!!! Thanks for handing me the clue that solved the slowdown problems I've been experiencing. Indeed, it seems the latest update to WindowShade has (at least for the moment), immensely speeded up my system. The sluggishness was especially noticeable when synching my Visor -- a painfully slow process that could last up to 10 minutes -- to less than a minute!
Cheers!! and Happy Holidays!

FruitMenu and NetInfo
Authored by: Robert on Dec 18, '02 03:39:23PM

I had a similar problem. Even command-line programs would hang for up to half a minute, and OroborosX failed reproducibly, apparently because it could not launch XDarwin. The problem was worse with FruitMenu 2.5.1 than with 2.5, but only inactivating FruitMenu seemed to prevent it. Deleting the preferences had no effect.

Finally I noticed some NetInfo timeouts in the console log, and I discovered that I had enabled NetInfo in the Directory Access utility, without actually having a NetInfo server on the network. When I changed this setting, the FruitMenu problems disappeared.

Backup too!

After reinstalling all my Haxies and (gingerly) the preference files for some of them, not only has the sluggishness gone but Backup now does it auto thing too!

Same problem, no solution

I have the same set of problems and tried all prescriptions dished out but the Apple folks, short of reinstalling Jaguar. (which I did a clean install anyway). I could not find the haxies in my library preference folder, or any unsanity plists around. Any ideas ?

Same problem, no solution

Hi, I have the same problem with my 1.6ghz G5, and most notably After Effects 5.5.1 and version 6. Most other APPS exhibit this problem, but it seems that it will take between two and three minutes from initiating launch of any given application, to the actual time it will launch. I use AE as my reference as it's what we use more often than other APPS.

It's like the APP (even an installer will take this long to launch if it's what I choose). The dock'd APP won't start jumping until 2-3 minutes have passed There's no indication I even tried to open a program.

This is a brand new system. I've reinstalled 10.2.7 from scratch and built the Applications installs from ground zero.

Any ideas? Anyone else seeing the same APP launch lag that I am?

As for Haxies, I had ClearDock and Application Enhancer installed. But no more and still have these untimely delays.

Other problems with Unsanity haxies
Authored by: bflaumenhaft on Dec 19, '02 02:08:34PM

I've had a number of problems with these guys. OroborosX (the best X window manager I've used) doesn't launch properly unless you e.g. add it to the FruitMenu exclude-applications list. (Took me forever to hunt that one down!)

Other problems with Unsanity haxies

I've now uninstalled Fruitmenu and replaced it with MaxMenus which, on first inspection, seems to have all the functionality of FruitMenu (plus a hole heap of other possibilities). My initial impression is that it's a good piece of software and my system seems a little snappier than it did previously. It might be worth your while giving it a try.
