I have an HP-PhotoSmart printer (but this problem affects several HP models) running 10.2.2. Every time I went to use my computer after a small/long absence, I noticed my mouse was, for lack of a better word, "wispy". When doing a "top -u" in terminal.app, the process "kernel_task" was hogging CPU even on my dual box.

At first I thought it was the screen saver going foobar, so I changed it then completely turned it off. I tried using "ktrace" but this doesn't work with the kernel (can anyone tell me how to "debug" or "trace" the kernel?). Finally, I googgle searched like mad and found this tech note from HP. I also ran across a program called "DealWithHP" which solved it for me; I found the reference and more information on macfixit.com. Here's the original story.
