Rename items in the Apple menu System
In keeping with the previous hints for replacing the 'About This Mac' logo and changing the title above it, here's how to change the title in the Apple menu. NOTE: Doing this requires modifying a System file, so Permissions need to be changed, or you can log in as root):
  1. In the Finder, navigate to System -> Library -> Frameworks -> Carbon.framework -> Versions -> A -> Frameworks -> HIToolbox.framework -> Versions -> A -> Resources -> English.lproj.

  2. Open StandardMenus.nib with Interface Builder (Developer Tools required) and customize to your heart's content (even delete that darn 'Get Mac OS X Software' link !)

  3. Save the file when finished (don't worry, a backup of the original will automatically be made for you) and enjoy your handiwork.
[Editor's note: I'd be a bit careful about removing the Get Mac OS X Software menu item -- a previous hint explained how to do this, and there were some additional required steps. I have not tried either of these hints myself (I tend to follow a "leave the system's bits alone" philosophy), so proceed with caution before removing items from the Apple menu...]

Apple Menu is Apple's menu

FruitMenu notwithstanding, it is probably a losing battle to try and control the Apple Menu. Apple will restore it to default condition when OS updates are done, I suspect, just as they always have. Why bother? Choose your battles. You may not like the Dock, but at least it's ours!

Funny thing happening...

I recently modified the Apple menu to change the "About this Mac" line to something more personal, and I deleted the "Get Mac OS Software" link using the interface builder. Everything worked fine, and there doesn't seem to be anything wrong with my system. Except... One minor annoyance that could become a major annoyance down the road: Whenever I do a "Force Quit" it logs me out. Everything else on the menu works great, but doing a FQ, even if I don't actually cause anything to quit, just closing the Force Quit box, logs me out of the system. Like I said, it's minor now, but could become a major annoyance real quick.

I do have to add that I'm not sure the mod I made is responsible. It's possible that it is, because I can't think of anything else that I've done that would cause this sort of behavior (other than upgrading to 10.2.2, but I haven't heard anyone else report anything like this), and I haven't tried restoring the backup of the file that interface builder created to see if that solved the problem. When I do get around to doing that, and it does turn out to be the reason, I'll probably just stick with the stupid link.

A little late...

Damn! I wondered why that was happening to me, and now I think I know why. I too used Interface Builder to remove the Get Mac OS X Software line from the Apple Menu, and I too suffered a log out whenever I brought up the Force Quit window. Now that I have just completed a clean install of Mac OS X 10.2.4, I no longer suffer the log outs. Yay.
