Gain access to the Finder during 10.2 install process System
Being an impatient one, I have discovered a way to gain access to the Finder while installing Disk 2 of Mac OS X 10.2 Jaguar. The usefulness of this hint is questionable...
  1. Choose Print from the File menu.
  2. Click "Save as PDF".
  3. From the Where menu, select iDisk -> anything.
  4. It will state that you are not signed up for .Mac and offer to let you open the Internet Preferences for you. Open Internet Preferences.
  5. In ".Mac Member Name", type any characters... it doesn't matter.
  6. Select the Name you entered and go into the Finder's Services menu from the System Preferences menu. Select any of the three options.
You now have Finder launched with presumably root access (haven't checked). All applications will quit when the Installer is done. Useless? Maybe, but it sure does pass the time when you're installing Jaguar again and again and ...

[Editor's note: Posted here in the interest of completeness; I certainly haven't tested it myself! I'm also not sure of the side effects one may encounter if you were to do this, so proceed at your own risk ... as you may be installing Jaguar again when it's done!]

Panther proven!

Instructions for Panther:
  1. Choose About Installer from the Installer menu.
  2. Select the version text (the only selectable text in the window)
  3. Control-click the text and choose Show Fonts from the menu.
  4. Click the "Action" menu in the Font Panel and select Manage Fonts from the menu.
  5. Font Book opens. Type some text in the Search field.
  6. Select text, and choose Open (or any of the options) from Finder's Services menu in the Font Book menu.
Once again, during Disc Two and Three, you can try out Panther's new features while waiting for it to finish.

You can run Software Update while installing Disk 2. Certainly not recommended, but I updated IE before the OS was completely installed.

If you have an unsupported machine with a G3 upgrade, you could use this tip to install the upgrade card drivers to enable the L2 cache. That would cut your install time in half!
