Fix some Brother multi-function print problems System
Those with Brother laser printers using v1.2 of their OSX drivers (including multifunction's like the 4800) may have found their printers becoming useless after upgrading to 10.2. The 10.2.1 update was necessary to restore some semblance of functionality, but there were problems galore in duplex printing and printing multiple pages.

I had a long conversation with Brother's Mac tech support person who admitted that there are still some issues with their driver and that more development is being done. However, there were a few suggestions I tried that did, at least, restore multiple page printing (though duplexing is still "broken"):
  1. Delete any printer drivers that you don't need.
  2. Run Disk Utility and "repair permissions" for your boot volume. This may take a few minutes so be patient.
  3. Reboot.
Yes, the ability to print multiple pages (even multiple discontiguous pages from Acrobat's thumbnails) has been restored. Duplexing still does not work (and will cause problems requiring "fsck -y" to fix) so don't even attempt it.

Note that there is now a beta OSX scanning driver available for the MFC-XXXX machines. You'll need Graphic Convertor or PhotoShop as the driver seems to be a twain-type of plug-in and not a stand-alone application.

While I don't (yet) have the same functionality I had in OS9, I am encouraged and wish to thank Sharon for her support and patience.

Brother printers

I have a Brother HL-1670N, and it works fine with Mac OS X 10.2.2, duplexing and all. The trick is not to use Brother\'s printer driver. You don\'t need them. Just install the PPD\'s from the CD that (hopefully) came with your printer, or you can download the from Brother\'s website. Then add you printer in Print Center, select the appropriate PPD, and enjoy your printing.
