I was messing around with AppleWorks 6 and I went to Edit -> Insert Equation. A box came up where you can enter equations (including some symbols not even included in the Character Palette) which can be helpful for math subjects. You can also run the application by itself if you wish; it's buried in Applications -> Appleworks 6 -> Appleworks Essentials -> Equation Editor -> Carbon -> Equation Editor. If you're going to use it much, you might wish to make an alias in an easier to reach location!

a bit of Background on Equation Editor
This tip seems out of place since Equation Editor is pretty old and has been OS X compatible I since Appleworks 6 came out (I think). But since you brought it up, I'll mention a bit more about it and some other math formula programs, including one for learning algebra-calc step by step.
Adobe FrameMaker
Even though Adobe has announced that they will not come out with FrameMaker for OSX, I feel compelled to point out that the FrameMaker built-in equation editor is pretty incredible. It not only allows you to create complex equations (duh!), it will also simplify and even solve them for you. Thus you can, for example, enter the full expression of an equation (as you might for a mathmatics or physics textbook), and then gradually simplify the equation without having to retype each simplified version. |
